"'Something is lost if you say 'my name is Emily and one day I will control the puddles,'" ::Pietro replied, also serious. He had been taught to aim high. Not for superiority's sake, but because nothing should be wasted, least of all potential. If she was uncomfortable with controlling the seas, she could start smaller, as long as was comfortable with herself.:: "Don't be afraid to be all you can be."

Emily sighed, looking down at her glass. For some reason, she wasn't feeling comfortable about this. Pietro had mentioned fear, and she knew that was exactly what she was feeling at times. A fear that someday, having too much power on her hands, she would just snap and want more. Become one of those who had power and terrorized the world with it, knowing no limitations and no restrictions. "I'm not carved out for it, Pietro," she said, wishing she could just cower and hide somewhere in the corner. He sounded so confident talking about it that it made her feel a bit intimidated by that confidence.

::Pietro set down his vodka and nodded, understanding where her words came from. He walked a thin line constantly, between pride and arrogance, strength and domination. When others reacted this way to him, he knew he was leaning too far to the wrong side. Magneto's influence speaking through him, and he cursed himself for not clenching down on it. The last thing he wanted in life was to become indistinguishable from his father's insanity:: "At the very least, don't be ashamed of who you are."

"You think I am?" Emily asked. She hadn't looked that deep into herself yet. Maybe it was more obvious from the outside.

"I think you might be," ::Pietro replied, seriously. She reminded him of Jean and Wanda when they were younger, that intimidation and shyness.::

"Why would I be?" Emily asked, staring past him, almost whispering since that was a question she mostly asked herself, not him; he wouldn't know the answer, anyway.

::Pietro had struck deeper than he intended; this was an issue she had tried to conquer before, if her behavior was any indication. He could venture a guess; after all, he had felt more than his share of shame in his life. But it wasn't a question for him to answer; it was hers.:: "Most of us have been."

Emily could feel her eyes getting wet, but she got rid of the water before it became visible. She knew she always got that reaction when she didn't manage something she was supposed to be good at. This time, it was being confident.
She braved Pietro's gaze. "Control the seas?" she repeated with a small smile.

::Pietro inclined his head, a nod of agreement and an act of deference to the question. She could, if she worked at it. If she would rather not, it was her decision. His eyes met hers with no boasting gleam, no pressure to do more.:: "If you so wish."

"My only two wishes are to be good at things I can do, and to help people," Emily said. "If that includes controlling the seas..."

"You fit in well there," ::Pietro replied. Although it was the first thought that came to mind, he found it fitting, particularly since she had doubted herself recently.::

If Pietro thought so, there must have been logic to it she couldn't grasp fully yet. She'd have to think about it later on in a more detailed way, she decided. Once again, she found herself trusting his judgment more than her own. "Well, my mutation must have some objective reason behind its existence, right?"

::One silver eyebrow arched towards Pietro's forehead. He had not heard that argument behind mutation in years. He took a sip of his vodka.:: "Is that how you view mutation?"

"I think that's the only way of viewing it," Emily shrugged. "At least I thought so before you asked. Mutations are the nature's way of experimenting and choosing ways to adapt organisms to the surroundings. So if we have superpowers, there's an objective, natural reason behind each of them, I suppose."

::It was a valid point when not framed in the context of supremacy and hate speech. Pietro's own mutation seemed closely linked with natural evolution, as if to answer the question, "what if life were faster?" But he'd always viewed genetics as random, without any divine purpose. Giving nature the power to reason was to make it divine and he simply couldn't believe in outside purposes. Their abilities ran the full spectrum of usefulness, or not in some cases, but only time would show if there was an evolutionary purpose, or if they'd go the way of the five-eyed fish.:: "Have you found your reason?"
