Violet blinked hard and turned to Alex in disbelief. "So... we had to die in there to get back?" She asked. She still hadn't started the car, and was waiting until she felt a little more composed to do so.

"I don't know," Alex said. "I really don't know what happened in there. What it was, under what conditions it all worked, how the people were selected, I really don't know anything, besides the fact that it felt real and yet it wasn't."

Violet shuddered, not wanting to think about it anymore. She started the truck and pulled out of the parking space. "Let's talk about something else. I'm too tired to think about it and we still have an hour's drive to get home."

"Sure," Alex nodded. The subject came quickly. "So, I think I still owe you a dance."

Violet was reminded of the strange look he'd been giving her when they were dancing, just before they'd been transported into the unexplained war zone. "You kept looking at me funny. Maybe the next time we dance, I should have more clothes on." Once again, Violet had put her foot directly into her mouth, and she was glad that she had to keep her eyes on the road to avoid the latest weird thing she'd said.

"I was looking at you funny?" Alex asked, surprised. "I couldn't! I mean, I don't see why I would. I was just dancing. How did you notice something like that out in the dark and the flashing lights, anyway?"

Violet just shrugged, not wanting to admit that it had been because they were so close to one another. "I guess it was just my imagination," she paused before adding, "You kind of make me nervous sometimes."

"Aw, come on," Alex looked at her with a small smile. "You know, I'm the new guy at the Institute, you just need to get used to me, is all." Something told him they were on their way to descending into awkwardness again, and he tried to keep a lighter tone.

Violet smiled and glanced at him, then returned her eyes to the road. "You are too sweet," she said. "You're trying to find the explanation that won't be uncomfortable, but..." she paused, knowing she was going to say it, but still feeling hesitant and worried, "I'm trying to tell you that I like you."

"I know," Alex said, since she'd already told him that when they had been fooling around in the pool. He hadn't minded it back then and even less so now, still it was nice to hear her say it again. "It shouldn't be uncomfortable, though, it's a nice thing."

"I'm not uncomfortable, really," she said thoughtfully, "It's just... I don't know, it just makes me a little nervous. I don't think that's unusual, given the circumstance." She realized, as she spoke, that it was true, and that it was getting easier to talk to Alex in general, the more time she spent with him.

"Oh, okay," Alex nodded. He glanced at the road ahead, and the momentary distraction made him notice the unmistakable tingling in his skin. His powers were reaching their limit.
Why in the world?! He had made sure he had discharged a reasonable amount of his powers before the club so that he wouldn't have to be worried about being a danger to people around him. Something must have happened in the meantime to make him charge up so quickly again.
"Violet, stop the car," he said firmly. Opening the window and releasing the excess powers through his hands wouldn't do, he could hit something or someone by the road.

Violet didn't know why Alex made this demand, she knew it had nothing to do with the conversation, but the tone in his voice didn't sound like one to argue with. She slammed on the brakes; there was no room to pull over in the city. "What's wrong?" She asked, the strain of the evening and everything tied to it apparent in her voice. She didn't think she could handle any more excitement.

"My powers," Alex replied quickly before dashing out of the car. Luckily, they had stopped near the Central park and it was already late at night, so he probably wouldn't cause much trouble around here.
He ran off into the park, along a clearing, which was good because he didn't want to destroy any trees. As soon as he was at a safe distance from the car, hundred yards or so, he fell on the ground, barely having the second to direct his powers upwards. Glowing plasma exploded up into the sky in a huge bright pillar and was gone in a few seconds.
He rolled onto his back, slightly shocked and still tense, staring up into the sky, giving his body time to cool down and thinking what may have caused such an overflow. Something in the club emitted radiation? Something in that alternative reality thing?

Violet pulled the keys out of the ignition and ran after him. She'd left the Bronco in stranger places; people tended not to be too curious about it for some reason. She caught up with him just as he was emitting a blast of plasma into the night sky. She stayed a safe distance away and watched, wide-eyed. "Woah," she said, in awe of his ability.
