"I didn't make fun of you!" Alex protested, splashing his hands against the water surface in a manner of objection. He tried very hard not to stare at Violet's wet shirt sticking to her body. It was just too distracting and the conversation had turned in a not very easy direction and he was very confused. "Honestly! Look, wait a second-" he rose on his arms from the pool and stood up, thinking how to phrase it.

Now it was Violet's turn to be distracted. She crossed her arms and waited for... well, whatever he'd asked her to wait for, all the while trying not to stare at the water streaming off of his chest.

Again, Alex put his hands on his hips, concentrating. "I do like you. Seriously. I'm sorry I've let the conversation get this weird, I didn't mean to. Like I said, I would feel bad about asking and now I am," he chuckled, "I totally had it coming."

Violet didn't know what to say, as she stood there with her clothes and shoes in her arms. "I just don't understand why it keeps getting so awkward..." she said, looking away. She scrunched up her nose and added, "I'm normally not this neurotic, I'm just not..." She stopped and sighed, then looked at him, "I honestly don't know anything about flirting or dates or any of this stuff, so I get flustered."

Alex took this in. To be honest, he didn't really understand what to do about all of this, either. He was trying to play by ear but the melody was just too erratic so far. How did they get from lab experiments to discussing flirting in a pool?
Glancing once more down Violet's figure, he said, "You know, I'm not an expert, either. I really don't know what to say for you to not stress yourself over it so much." He crossed his arms on his chest and frowned in confusion. "Can I just wave a white flag here and ask you not to be angry with me? I feel bad."

Violet could feel this thing spiraling out of control and she wish she could just start it all over. "I'm not mad," she said. She looked at her feet again and pushed her hair out of her face. "Can we pretend I didn't throw a temper tantrum and go back to swimming?" She asked.

"Sure we can," Alex said, uncrossing his arms. He laughed quietly, glancing at the mansion's building. "You know, half of the school is going to be gossiping about it tomorrow. I don't care much but it's just funny to think about."

Violet shrugged. "As long as we're not naked or high, it's fine," she said, dropping her things on the ground again. "And those restrictions only apply because I'm a teacher," she added with a giggle. Then she jumped back in the pool.

Alex followed her, thinking that it was better to swim in wet jeans than to stand on the ground barefoot in wet jeans. He was still trying to adapt to New York climate.
When he resurfaced after his dive, he asked, holding back a laugh, "So it's all right for the students to be naked or high?"

"Of course it's not alright, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen," Violet said, happy that the latest wave of awkwardness had passed. "The kids here get away with a lot because they come from such different backgrounds, and they have so much they have to deal with as young mutants. Plus, they really don't have anywhere else to go."

Alex noted it down inwardly and went for another lap across the pool. He didn't know what to say in that particular moment and small talk wasn't really working out anymore, or at least it seemed so to him.

Violet went back to floating, listening to the sounds of Alex swimming away from her. He wouldn't be able to hear her when he was swimming, so there was no reason to speak. The quiet was nice, anyway, so she let herself enjoy it. Resting on the water was so relaxing, especially under the night sky.

It wasn't as much pleasure swimming in jeans as it was without them. Alex briefly thought about taking them off, but then decided that it was pretty pointless by now. As soon as he was near Violet again, in the shallower part of the pool, he stood up. Water was reaching his chest. "I'm thinking I should plan a proper swim in proper clothes some time later," he told Violet.

Violet looked up and him and said, "Okay. I was going to tell you that you didn't have to stay here if you didn't want to. I think I'm going to hang out for awhile. I have a lot on my mind." She pushed herself around in the water, where she was still floating, in order to keep him in her line of vision.

"I can probably change into something dry," Alex said. Again into something dry. The second time this day. This had been a weird day. "And return to keep you company, if you want."
