Violet surfaced and pushed her wet hair out of her face. Treading water as he spoke, she smiled. "I'll take that as a compliment," she replied. "And secondly?"

"Secondly," Alex said, kicking his sneakers off, then taking his socks, sweatshirt and T-shirt off, "I guess you warrant the water being warm enough," he added before diving into the pool off the edge.

Violet laughed as he dived in. She was glad he hadn't written her off as a nut and left her there. She swam the length of the pool, enjoying the feeling of the water moving over her body. Once in the shallow end, she popped up again and looked for Alex.

Alex swam after her, then halted at a small distance from her, not standing up but floating in the water. "So, what's next?" he asked, looking rather amused. "Fox hunting? Painting landscapes? Mass demonstrations?"

Violet kicked her feet up so that she was floating on her back. "Who knows?" she said playfully. "I just really felt like swimming, and sometimes you have to give in to those urges, you know?" She found herself once again looking at the stars.

Alex chuckled. "Well, like I've said, the award is yours... Hm, you know, I'll probably feel bad for being straightforward, but-" he narrowed his eyes. "Are you often like that or is this a way of flirting with me?"

Violet wasn't prepared for such a direct question and lost the equilibrium that kept her afloat. She sunk under the water with the gesture of someone falling down. She stayed underwater for a moment, trying desperately to figure out how to answer him. When she surfaced again, she turned to him and wiped her eyes. "I don't know," she answered, feeling a little deflated.

"Okay," Alex shrugged. "I just thought I'd ask." He lingered where he was, thinking about it for a moment, then it became just too awkward and he dove again, turned underwater and, resurfacing, swam towards the other end of the pool.

Violet stayed where she was, the water shallow enough for her to rest on her knees. She moved her arms aimlessly through the water and wondered, once again, if she'd done something wrong. Then she got fed up with that feeling. He was facing away from her when she spoke, "What's wrong with flirting?" She asked, frowning.

Alex stopped and turned around, facing her. "Nothing," he said. "I just like definiteness. Exact sciences rub off of me, I guess." It felt kind of strange even discussing it, let alone discussing it while swimming in the pool at night in his jeans.

Violet felt a kind of rebelliousness that didn't quite reach annoyance. "Well, maybe I am flirting with you and I'm just not very good at it," she said. She realized she was actually pouting, but didn't appreciate being put on the spot like that. Why couldn't things just be fun, why did they have to keep getting uncomfortable?

Alex stretched in the water, floating on his back and staring at the sky. The view made him think of his powers; he thought that if he used those now, the pool would be emptied. A random bizarre thought. "So how to distinguish between good and bad flirting?" he wondered.

Violet felt like he was making fun of her at this point, so she pushed over to the pool's steps and climbed out. She hurried over to where she'd dropped her various articles of clothing to gather them. She felt frustrated and embarrassed and the only thing she could think of was to run away.

With his head half-immersed in the water, it took Alex a while to register that Violet had gotten out of the pool. He raised his head and saw her collecting her things. What the hell, he thought. She just wasn't giving him any breaks with her unpredictability. How was he to interpret this, for example? Was it something he said or had she just had enough of nighttime swimming? "Violet?" he asked, moving towards the nearest edge of the pool. "You're leaving?"

She stopped and turned toward him. "When a girl admits that's she's flirting with you, it's not very nice to make fun of her." She felt that she was one childish outburst from stomping her foot, and she felt very silly, dripping wet in her t-shirt and panties. "Even if you don't like her," she added, looking down at her bare feet.
