"You're welcome, and don't worry about the awkwardness. It follows me where ever I go." She turned to him and smiled, then poked him playfully in the shoulder and said "Tag, you're it!" before running away, down the dimly lit path.

Again, it seemed Violet was very skilled in the ability of taking him aback. Alex stared after her for a couple of seconds that gave her a good headstart. "Hey, come on!.." he yelled, then laughed and ran after her. He didn't know about her but he himself was in excellent physical shape and would probably catch up with her in a few seconds, regardless of her headstart.

Violet spent a good portion of every day training, so she was in peak physical condition. She ran hard and she ran fast, hoping to distract him from what had appeared to be an embarrassing situation. She took a curve in the path and stopped to hide behind a tree.

As soon as Alex reached the same curve, he noticed that there was no one ahead on the path anymore. So Violet probably went off the path. He stopped and looked around. "Okay, I know you're hiding," he informed her, speaking into the dark beyond the trees that framed the path. "And you're also making me feel like a seven-year old, for god's sake."

Violet stepped out from her hiding place immediately. "I'm sorry," she said, "I was just trying to make up for the weirdness before, I guess I just made it worse." She shoved her hands into her pockets, feeling bad and embarrassed, herself. She turned back the way they'd come on the path and started walking toward what she hoped was the mansion.

"No," Alex laughed, a bit disappointed she had revealed herself so quickly. But then again he wasn't sure what to make of all this, so it was probably better to have a little pause. "I was just beginning to have fun with it," he admitted, following her.

"It's okay, I tend to be kind of impulsive and people sometimes find it childish," she shrugged, not wanting to let on how badly it had stung when he'd said she made him feel like a child. He'd even added 'for god's sake,' as if she were being inappropriate. "I know it's not the most appealing quality."

"What?" Alex asked, confused. He took her by her elbow, turning her to face him. "Are you saying it's something bad?" he chuckled. "Everybody needs to feel like a kid every once in a while. I just didn't expect it, in a way. You know, first I'm walking with you, in the forest, at night-" he glanced around. "And then bam! - seven years."

She looked up at him, trying to determine whether or not he was just trying to make her feel better. "It just sounded like you were annoyed," she said with another shrug, "That wasn't my intention."

"No, I wasn't, honest," Alex replied. It was funny how the simple walk on the mansion's grounds seemed to be jumping from awkward to amusing to awkward to amusing.

"Okay," Violet conceded, noting that he still had his hand on her arm. "We should get back, though. I'm starting to get tired." She'd hoped that this walk would have been free of the tension they'd had to deal with in the lab, and was disappointed that things were still so weird.

Alex nodded. Since they were about to start walking again, he let go of her arm. "So what brought you to the Institute?" he asked, feeling like having some small talk again. He glanced at Violet. "If it's not anything too personal, of course."

Violet shook her head. "There are very few topics that are off-limits with me," she said, her smile returning after this most recent bout of weirdness. "After I graduated, I knew I wanted to teach, and I knew I wanted to be a part of the mutant community, so I applied for a teaching position here."

"As simple as that," Alex smiled. "You know, it's actually good to hear a story that does not involve any 'my parents kicked me out of the house and I was chased by an angry mob and then wanted by the police'. Gives one hope that at least some things happen to our kind in a positive way."

Violet was all too familiar with the type of story Alex was talking about. "Yeah, it was that simple. I had a pretty solid childhood, then I went to college, and now I'm here," she looked down at the path they were walking on, "I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I didn't start getting into trouble until I got here." She laughed, but it had a sadness to it. Violet knew that this is where she wanted to be, and that this is what she wanted to do with her life, but it was sometimes unbearably difficult.
