"It does," Alex agreed with a chuckle. "Easy to lose direction. Scott's got this natural sense of direction, he's like this walking geometry. I do get lost sometimes," he laughed, and looked around. "Well, if we get lost, I have tons of flares for the rescue team," he raised his hand, flicking his fingers once to produce a small blue flash of plasma.

Violet was once again impressed with the display of Alex's powers. With a child-like interest, she said, "Do it again."

Alex looked at her with amusement. He found it nice and refreshing that someone would actually enjoy the display of his powers and that he didn't have to hide it like an embarrasing secret. "Like this?" he asked, snapping his fingers again, then raised another hand, "or like this?" Again his powers discharged in a tiny bright burst.

Violet smiled and watched, fascinated by both the science and the beauty. "Bigger!" she said, letting herself get swept up in the moment. She hadn't felt this light and carefree in a long time.

"Hey, careful-" Alex said in a slightly more watchful tone, the amused smile still not leaving his face, though. "It can get very hot, plasma is worse than fire, you know." Still, he stepped a few steps back and indulged her, making his hands become engulfed in plasma, as if they were torches with hot light. Thin, barely visible - because this charge was rather weak - circles of plasma emanated from those torches and disappeares in the air, leaving nothing but gusts of heat within a one-foot radius from Alex.

Violet clapped again. "It really is beautiful," she said. "It makes me sad that it gives you so much trouble." She took a few thoughtful steps, aware that the air was just slightly warmer. "And even though I like your plasma doesn't mean I'm going to get all silly and walk into it," she smiled back at him and added, "I am a scientist, you know." This attempt at cuteness was cut short when Violet, not watching where she was going, tripped and fell, sprawling in a most unladylike fashion in the grass.

Alex's first impulse was to dash and catch Violet, then in an instant he remembered that his hands were probably still too hot after plasma discharge, then it occurred to him that she was wearing a jacket and so it was probably okay, but by then the second in which he could have done something had already passed. And at once he felt ashamed for not helping.
He shook his hand, cooling it down against the night air, and then finally hurried to help Violet get up, leaning down and offering her his hand. "You okay?" he asked with concern-slash-guilt.

Violet rolled over onto her back, laughing hysterically. "I was wondering how long I'd be able to hide the fact that I'm a total klutz," she said, still laughing. She took his hand but immediately pulled away, "Jeez, you're hot!" She exclaimed without thinking, then started laughing again.

"I am?" Alex asked, touching his cheek with his hand to check. Naturally, he felt nothing. But probably she was right and his hands still hadn't cooled down. "Well, I am," he said without thinking, crossing his arms and sticking his hands under his armpits, then he uncrossed them again, noticing Violet had found something funny in it. "Wait-" he said even as he himself started to laugh. "Violet, seriously!"

"Seriously?" Violet asked, as if this was, in fact, a serious issue, "You are incredibly hot." She returned to uncontrolled laughter and reached for his hand again in order to stand up.

Alex pulled her up to her feet, looking at her with a mix of amusement and bewilderment. "You are making fun of me, seriously," he said, barely holding back a nervous chuckle. Then, while she was still laughing, he glanced at her knees, leaned down and lightly dusted off her jeans, trying to do something to cover up his confusion.

Violet felt a twinge of affection for Alex as he dusted off her knees. If he stuck around for any length of time, he'd learn that she was always falling down or spilling something. The tone in his voice halted her laughter and her eyes widened. "I'm not making fun of you," she said, her voice quiet, afraid she'd offended him.

Alex straightened up and looked at her. "You sounded very ambiguous," he explained with the same half-amused, half-sheepish expression on his face. "I wasn't sure if it wasn't, um- intentional. Because otherwise I'd go all 'Violet, are you actually paying me compliments while lying on the ground?' "

Violet felt the same tension she'd felt in the lab. She looked down the path, even though she could only see to the next lamp. "At first I was startled by the heat of your hands," she said, starting to walk again, "but then I paid you a compliment while I was laying on the ground." She smiled to herself as she continued down the path.

Alex lingered in place, digesting her words for a long moment. God, that was really awkward now. He wondered what she could expect him to do now? Reciprocate with a compliment of his own? He could easily think of several, she was a very attractive girl, but he still felt unexpectedly confused about it, so it could probably look very clumsy.
"Thanks," he said after fighting back some of his hesitation and followed her along the path.
