Shade sighed inwardly, her good mood slightly dimmed by a faint sting of sadness in a very remote and probably undetectable corner of her mind. It wasn´t visible in the way she talked or in her facial expression, but it was there.
"We could learn a lot from each other." she said as the flames got a little brighter. "The Gambit could show me how to steal boats, how to expand my powers and I could try to show him that some things aren´t as scary as they seem."

Gambit glanced at her with half a smile. "Fair enough," he said. "Jus' don't put 'im on a leash and make sure t' scratch him behind his ears every now an' den, and he'll make a good pet."

Somehow his words had the effect of pushing her faint sadness back. Was it because she did not feel like having any sad thoughts or getting too thoughtful right now? Probably. Shade knew there were things she had to think about, on her own, there would be moments when she would very likely get emotional about it all by herself, but not now.
She looked up and mirrored his smile, unable to hide her affection for him in that simple gesture. "Will do." she replied, checked the fire again, then got to her feet and wandered off a few steps to look for some sticks for the sausages.

It was another one of their slightly weird conversations that he liked so much. Gambit smiled and started making simple sandwiches with bread and cheese.

Shade quickly found what she needed. With two finger thick twigs which she broke down to about 2 and a half feet each, she returned to the fireplace and sat down next to him. It would have been easier to talk if she had chosen her earlier place opposit of him, but her change in place resulted from a need for closeness that her pushed back sadness had caused. "Looks yummy." she commented while she took out the sausages.

"Dunno 'bout you," Gambit said, "but I'm so hungry I could eat anythin' no matter how it looked." He chuckled. "Want some coke?"

She nodded, answering his question and grinned. "Me too." she said. "I´m starving. And I bet both my stomach and my sense of taste will stir some rebellion if I try to eat any more sugary stuff."

Gambit took a bottle of mineral water out of his bag. "Here," he said, "thought you might want some."

"Thanks." Shade said, took the bottle and drank from it. The water took away some of the remaining sweet flavour that was still lingering a bit as she had had nothing to eat since breakfast apart from the finger paint. She handed the bottle back to Gambit in case he was thirsty as well and speared the sausages with the sticks. Then she lazily leant against his shoulder, still because she just wanted some closeness.

Gambit drank some water, pulling Shade closer to him with one hand. It felt good sitting with her like this, and he wasn't going to deny himself something that felt good. Then he put the bottle away, took one of the sticks from Shade's hand and held it over the fire. "Consider it de closin' ceremony for fire in de woods," he said, "before I install smoke detectors 'round here."

"Okay." Shade gave him a quick glance and a smile, then concentrated on trying not to burn her lunch, holding the stick a little higher. She had never felt insecure and attackable in the mansion but after the second attack, a slight atmosphere of fear was feelable now and then, as if the strolling of the students in the hallways and on the grounds had lost some of their carelessness since she had arrived at the school the year before. "I probably said that before, but it feels good to know you checked and improved things."

"Good," Gambit said. He raised the sausage on the stick a little, turning it around and inspecting it.

Her stomach was growling now and she was almost sure Gambit could hear it too. Shade kept grilling the sausage, then took it off the fire, eyed it critically and took a small, testing bite. She almost burnt her tongue and quickly took some water to cool it down. "Not quite." she said, moving around her tongue to ease down the slight burn.

"Not quite what?" Gambit asked, not sure what she was referring to.

Shade realised her words had sounded ambiguous in a way she had not intended them to sound. "I meant the sausage." she clarified. "Not quite done. No criticism in your skills intended." She tousled his hair.
