"Cheers, chere," Gambit echoed her tone, accompanying his response and raised glass with a small nod. "So how d'ya find dis place?" he asked after taking a sip of his wine.

Shade put down the glass, letting her right hand rest next to it while her eyes wandered across the room. "It has its charme." she said.

"Let's hope de menu won't disappoint us, either," Gambit said.

Shade´s lips curved into a little smile, not a flirtatious one, just a smile of acknowledgement. "People in places like this usually make sure that doesn´t happen." she commented, following a waiter who was just walking by with her gaze. "Have you been to New York before LeBeau?"

"Occasionally," Gambit said, wondering at her choice of an 'alias' for him. "Business trips," he said, putting small stress on word 'business'.

"I see." Shade gave back her voice still neutral. "It´s not too bad a place after all." She was still trying to get into the role, her mind slowly forming some sort of a vague background story which she could of course impossibly use as such things would not be spoken out loud, were they indeed what they pretended to be.

The rules of their little game put unexpected restrictions on Gambit, and he had to try hard to keep up with them. It was a game on three levels, and he needed time to adjust to all three of them: Gambit - secret agent - irrelevant restaurant visitor. He was clear about his own level; the other two were intertwined in too complicated a manner to pull them apart that easily.
He decided to add a small twist to the scenario and pretend he'd long had a crush on Shade and that was their first 'assignment' together. It didn't make things easier, but made the picture clearer.
The waiter came and took their orders. Gambit followed him with his eyes for a few seconds and turned to Shade. What could their cover story be? Suppose they were travelling separately. "How was your flight here, Emily?"

Of course he would not call her ´Shade´ in this game, that much had been clear for her. Still, having Gambit call her by her first name was kind of unexpected. Noone had called her that for almost a year - her parents excluded. She blinked, but quickly slipped back into the role.
So he was assuming they had arrived in the city on different ways from different places which was fine with her. "Rather calm." she said, taking another sip of her wine, looking across the room casually, then back at him. If she assumed she was an undercover spy it might be best to blend with the other visitors and not rouse suspiction by overly stiff behaviour. "although I prefer flying myself." Why not add a little flying license she thought with an inward shrug. At least in movies, quite a couple of agents had that.

Had Gambit been in a teasing mood, he'd have asked her what model she usually flew, but he wasn't sure she could handle that question, so he decided to avoid that for now. "Oh really?" he asked, feigning genuine interest. "I didn't know ya had a pilot's license. How many flight hours y'already have?"

Shade knew next to nothing about flying, but Gambit probably suspected that she reckoned. So she just decided to make something up. "Haven´t had it for long yet." she therefore said allowing herself a little smile which still was just a smile, nothing as affectionate as she would normally give him. "about a hundred after I passed."

She was being rather stiff with him, Gambit noted with an inward smirk. Even more reserved than Shade had been before they started dating. Probably it meant, in their little game, that they didn't know each other that closely. Strictly business relationship? Well, he was intent on playing past that. That could be fun and challenging. Flirting with her on the condition of flirt being forbidden with their 'assignment' at hand? Lots of fun.
"Dat is incredible," he said. "Was is difficult or very difficult?"

Shade noticed that, according to everything she knew about Gambit by now, her in game behaviour had to be some sort of challenge for him. She was deliberately taking on a somewhat distanced attitude towards him, assuming they maybe knew each other for quite a while but had only crossed paths rather randomly and not worked with each other closely yet.
She gave him half a smirk; that would not be audible on their assumed tape. "I always liked it, it´s fun." she said. "presumed you have a head for heights."

"Is flight your only extreme hobby, or dere's more?" Gambit asked. Presuming their assignment was to make appearance at the restaurant and pretend they're just normal people having dinner, small talk was their only way to pass time; and the best way for him to find out more about his gorgeous 'colleague'. He was liking it more and more.

It was fun to watch him, Shade thought. Trying to read his reactions, read the tone in his voice. It was exciting, a little bit like testing, like on their first date. "Well, that depends on what you would call extreme." she said. "my job can be that at times."

He knew he wasn't supposed to go into job matter, and making her discuss a fake job would simply be not fun. "Dis kind of a vacation you're on now must be quite a pleasant change from dat, I suppose?" he asked instead, showing a slight smirk as he tilted his head a bit.
