Alex chuckled at her joke. He then watched her make a makeshift bird call with a blade of grass and then with her hands. He used to be able to do these but it's been ages and he was certain the technique had by now slipped his mind altogether.
"Give the month," he said, "I'd suppose they already have. Are you into biology?"

"I do enjoy it, I like most sciences. I like the nature in biology, I like the culture structure of sociology, the inner mechanisms of psychology, and the reactions of chemistry," Iris said putting another hand to her mouth and making a twittering noise. She smiled gently as a small sparrow few by and landed in a nearby tree. "I know you like science, do you have a favorite field?"

Alex tilted his head a bit. "Well, I'm done with my undergrad in Geology and I think I'll continue the same way, though I might be tempted to make a slant towards thermodynamics, just to have a better understanding of my own powers."

"That would be interesting, have you been to an active volcano? I wonder if you would have some immunity against the lava?" Iris said plucking a few spring daisies and braiding them together. "I was thinking for myself a strong science background but eventually going into medicine. Maybe become a surgeon or a pediatrician, I'd probably have the best stitches in the hospital."

"Which would be awesome," Alex agreed. "There can never be too many doctors."

"Agreed, going through med school would drain a lot of my inheritance from my parents and grandparents. But I think it would be a better use of the money instead of going straight into opening, say, a clothing store. So do you plan on become a full fledged professor, or are you more interested in field work?" Iris asked pulling her feet out of the water.

Again and again Alex was having difficulties in choosing what parts of her speech to respond to. She seemed to be fond of discussing two or three subjects at once and he had to prioritize. Or maybe she was afraid he'd actually start to respond to them?..
"You can't escape from science into an office," he said. "It would have to be a sum of the two. I'm interested in the forces that move the ground, but even doing a major theoretical research on that would have me out on the fault in any case."

"That seems plausible, I sure you would bring a lot to the table in a study," Iris agreed as she pulled her socks and shoes back on.

"Let's hope so," Alex said, resisting the urge to float away on the current of his daydreams into the future where he would be making scientific discoveries. "How is it?" he asked, with a nod of his head indicating the water in which Iris's feet had just been a moment ago.
