It didn´t take the other guy long to make it into the building. Here goes, Shade thought, noticing her inner voice had just the slightest tinge of a sarcastic undertone. "Hey." she just said, hoping she more or less was able to look more relaxed than she felt. Remember me? She continued the introduction in thought. Met at the hellfire. I´m Shade, I killed someone.

Kevin had his hands in his pockets, looking a bit wary. He shrugged. "I don't really know what it is you two have got in mind," he remarked as if commenting on his shrug. "Can't be ready for god knows what, you know."

"We're improvisin'," Gambit said. "Somethin' tells me dis is somethin' ya're good at."

Improvising actually fit the situation rather well, Shade thought with some mild sarcasm. She didn´t doubt that Gambit, as usual, had quite a few things up his sleeves, but there were a lot of things involved in this that made it difficult. Or that could blow it. Kevin was one. And looking at him it seemed as if he was just as uncomfortable about the situation as she was. And who could blame him, she thought, the guy had no idea what was coming his way.
"We need you to stage as me for something," she said. "believably." Which included the forged background story of course, she added in thought. She just hoped she was half as good an actress as Kevin might be.

"So what's the story, then?" Kevin asked, habitually applying the ability of his powers to 'size up' Shade, to copy her and recreate the tiniest details. How his powers managed this copying, he had not the slightest idea, but it worked, and it was enough for him.

"Shade's a murder suspect," Gambit said, not beating around the bush. "I'd like t' shake de case off 'er. It's defensible but we need t' hand it to de police first before dey can hand it back to us."

What Gambit said surprised her. Shade was not sure what she had thought she´d say and thinking about it for a moment, bursting out with the truth did not seem like a Gambit thing to do here, but still - it was as if she had already braced herself inwardly to what he would say and now that it was different, she had to suppress the urge to give him a slightly confused look. She decided to play along and see where it would lead. Improvise as Gambit had said. "The police have been looking for me." she said. "but I´m not guilty." She inwardly congrtulated herself. Not a lie from her point of view. Not after she had chewed through all of this deciding that whereas there had been something Manuel had been able to amplify, she was not a killer. Nor a sadist.

Kevin stared at them both. Did they actually assume that he would be interested in getting his hands dirty in such an affair? He could have been years ago, but he had serious matters to worry about these days. But he kept this question for later.
"So why do you need me for, then, if you're not guilty?" he asked. "Just go there and prove it."

Gambit did mention it in the beginning, but felt it needed to be spelled out. "Because you can help us remove 'er trace from de system. They don' know her last name, an' I intend to keep it dat way. Dis means we can provide 'em wit' a fake set of fingerprints, fake eye scan, fake height, whatever. You can pass for 'er as close as dey think, but as far as we want. So in de future, should Shade be, say, questioned by de police as a witness or get pulled over wit' a speedin' ticket, she won't come wit' a history of bein' involved in somethin' like a murder, even if she's innocent."

"Somebody else was involved." Shade added, keeping things vague as well, without lying but keeping her words in a way that they would not give away too much information just yet. Not before she had figured out a few things. "and that somebody is the one that´s guilty." She inwardly thanked Tante Mattie. Without the heart to heart she had had with the old woman, she would not have been able to see things like that so clearly. "that person is in hiding, but I want him to take responsibility. So basically you...as me...can help with that. If they don´t believe you, you can use your powers to get out nonetheless. I could not."

"Could I?" Kevin asked, skeptical. "Wait, do you actually want me to go to the police, to turn myself in for investigation and probably a trial?"

Gambit leaned with his back against the decrepit table and, taking a plastic cup from the bag, helped himself to some coffee. "Dat sound like too much of trouble?" he asked. "Gambit wouldn' be offerin' somethin' dat wasn't thought through. We're here to discuss de plan in details."

Truth be told, Shade could understand the young man´s concerns. Or reluctance. Or whatever it was. Gambit had said he was hiring Kevin as a professional but she wondered for a moment how much experience he really had staging as others. She had researched about him. Or rather, recalled the face. He was a magazine editor. Not that this really changed things. That could still mean he had some sort of .. second life or job that involved things like this.
"It´s the only possibility to set things straight, because right now they´re after me." Shade said. "not after the one that really is to be held responsible. Me...or someone looking like me speaking up against him is the only chance to set things right."

"You should see where I'm coming from," Kevin said, tilting his head a bit to the side. "You two are walking up to me asking me to participate in a murder case by no less than getting my hands dirty in all the proceedings instead of you. I'm not a freelancer anymore. I've got a kid to raise and a magazine to run. Wait, does it actually not bother you that I'm in the mass media?"

Shade could understand what Kevin put forward. As she had already voiced while discussing the matter with Gambit, the fact that the young man had a small child to look after, was something that did bug her somewhat. But what Kevin said also gave her an idea.
"It´s because you´re in the mass media that I am sure you can grasp the scope of this." she said in a voice that sounded calmer than she had believed possible. She was nervous about this, she really was, and possibly Gambit could tell to some extent, but she somehow managed not to look like it too much. "This is...actually a case that has been going through the mass media." She had been following that of course. Closely. And she decided it could not be a bad idea to maybe try and go for some solidarity. "With things focusing on what little desription there was of me, even though I was not the force behind the murder." again, very carefully worded, avoiding the fact that it had been her to pull the trigger for now. "With the real person behind it staying as much in the dark as the ..." There was a minimum pause, just a fraction that it took her to actually taste the word on her tongue. It felt unnatural to call them that. After what they had done. It did not change her feeling bad about what had happened, but that had never been because she had felt this man had not deserved it. "...victim."
