Saying that Iris arrived in New York would imply that she had previously existed somewhere else. While one would expect a woman in her thirties to have history - friends, family, jobs, etc. - there was no evidence of Iris's past available to even the keenest of investigators. Regardless of the events that may or may not have lead to her being in an apartment on the third floor of a moderately maintained walk-up in Chelsea, there she was. And there were other people in the three bedroom apartment, more than one might expect to find living comfortably in the available space.
During the various mutant conflicts in recent years, Iris worked tirelessly to help any injured or displaced mutants and many of them had developed a loyalty to her. While she never actively attempted to organize or direct anyone, a close-knit cooperative group had formed. All three of the apartment's bedrooms were crowded with bunk beds and makeshift cots and the living room was a cozy nest of sofas that rarely went a night unoccupied. Incomes were shared and those unable to work stayed home to help care for children and household tasks. The apartment was cluttered but always clean and no one ever went hungry. The common bond between the inhabitants was a strong faith in evolution and the corresponding belief that - as evidenced by their obvious advantages over humans - mutants were the superior species.
Word-of-mouth insured a slow but steady growth to Iris's household and the increase in income had allowed them to recently rent the apartment across the hall. Like-minded mutants needed only to ring the buzzer for either of the third floor apartments and they were welcomed inside.
