It was around nine in the morning when Smiler reached the location of the center he and Kurt would be opening soon. He finally received the keys from the company that was giving the place for renting. It was time to make some renovation and give the place a new look. He wanted it to be new - like a new start, a new life they could give many people later on. He unloaded some cans of paint and some instruments before his heart signaled that it was time for a small break and peaceful contemplation. He sat down on one of the windowsills, looking around and imagining how the place would look like once they were done.

Violet thought that a support group for mutants was an excellent idea, so she'd driven her trusty bronco into the city on a carefully timed schedule in order to arrive at the posted time. It had been ten months since the Prophecy had been delivered at Hellfire, and things were still tense. There had been no signs of AI, but there were small riots and acts of dangerous vandalism. Of course, it was all blamed on mutants.
This was Violet's calling - to help the mutant community however she could. She arrived at the address she'd copied from the ad and knocked tentatively at the door. She was excited about the opportunity, but a small part of her thought this would be the perfect cover for a Weapon X trap. That part reasoned that it would be a little cartoonish, like leaving a bar of chocolate with a note saying "For Mutants" inside a cage. She shook her head to try to clear away the paranoia.

Turning his head at the sound of the knocking, Michael called, "It's open!"

Violet pushed the door open and stepped into the room, which was already prepped for renovating. She saw Michael near the window. They hadn't officially met, but she remembered him from the summer theater program. He'd been rather quiet, so she didn't know much about him. "Hi!" she said with her usual enthusiasm. "Am I the first one here?"

Michael recognized Violet as well. "Hello," he said. "Looks like it, though I'm expecting Kurt any minute." He pushed himself off the windowsill and walked to greet her with a friendly handshake. "I know we've been at the auditions together, but just to be properly introduced, I'm Michael."

"It's nice to meet you, Michael, I'm Violet," she replied, shaking his hand. Letting her eyes move around the room, she added, "This is a great space. I love what you're doing here, and I hope I can get involved." She put her hands on her hips, still taking everything in.

"Does this mean I can count on your help with painting and all?" Michael asked. "I was planning to finish the paint job today and start with the flooring. It's okay if you just want to hang around, though."

"Definitely!" Violet answered enthusiastically. "I'm here to help, so just tell me what you need me to do." She'd worn old clothes, in readiness for painting and other messy work and was excited to get started.

"Excellent," Michael said. "It's good to have company." He walked over to a big plastic bag and, rummaging through it, pulled out a few roller sponges, plastic trays and some brushes. "Stuff for painting," he commented, placing those near a chair in the middle of the room. "Just pick any wall and start painting from the top down. We'll leave a couple of feet from the floor up for a different color-" he glanced at Violet as if seeking advice, "-maybe orange, blue or green? Anyway, you can leave a couple of feet at the bottom without paint for now."
So that it wouldn't look as if he were just dumping the whole load of work on her alone, he set the example by taking a tray and a roller sponge and carried them to the wall where he would start painting.

Violet gathered her supplies and chose a wall. Soon, she was applying paint as she'd been instructed. "What do you do, other than this?" She asked, hoping to spark conversation.

Before starting with the paint job, Michael returned to his car and brought the rest of the materials inside the room. When Violet asked her question, he replied, "I've started college and I have a part-time job as a car mechanic." He wasn't sure to what extent she actually wanted to know what else he did, but he was hoping this covered it. "I think this just about covers it."

"I'm guessing you go to school here in the city?" She asked, not taking her eyes away from her work. It felt good to do some manual labor and have an idle chat.

"No, I found a college in Westchester," Michael replied. He opened a can of paint and poured a good amount onto his tray, then dipped his brush in and started to paint. "They gave me a scholarship, so I'm all set for now."

Violet was always focused on some aspect of her work or another, so she wasn't even aware there was a college in Westchester. It was a large area, though, so it wasn't terribly surprising. "What are you studying?"

"Psychology," Michael replied. "Being an empath, I thought it was only logical. I think some serious theoretic background would do me good, training with the Professor can only get you so far."
