An urge for takeout had struck Matthew late in the evening and wouldn't go away. Eventually he had given in, put a leash on Humphrey and was now entering his favorite Chinese takeout place. The woman behind the counter-Xi Song-smiled knowingly at Matthew and called out a greeting in Chinese, which he returned, also in Chinese.
He took little time looking at the menu, as he knew it almost by heart, before ordering the pineapple chicken dinner plate. Xi Song called the order back to the cooks and then offered Matthew an eggroll to give to Humphrey, who ate the treat happily, and then followed Matthew to sit at a table until the meal was ready.

::Karl had nothing better to do with his time, and with all of the commuting, he had considered selling the house in Connecticut and moving to the City. He had yet to do so, but he still spent an increasing amount of time there. After an aggravating session, the green man found himself hungry and walked into the first cheap restaurant he could find, which happened to be Chinese food. After placing a quick order, he was taken to an area to wait, and he ordered a drink to ease the boredom.::

Matthew had met mutants in the city; being one with the sort of power he had it was hard not to. But all of the mutants he had met had looked, for the most part, ordinary, with nothing to indicate that they were different in any way. So when the green man walked in, Matthew found that his gaze was lingering longer than was considered polite and looked away to hide his obvious curiosity.
Humphrey was also curious, his head tilted to one side, and he suddenly surged forward. The jerk at his hand caught Matthew by surprise and he struggled to grab the leash again but to no avail: Humphrey was already trotting up to the green man with a look on his face that clearly said "be my friend", and Matthew was close behind.

::Animals tended to like Karl, and they were supposedly excellent judges of character. Whenever he needed to remind himself that he wasn't a lost cause he remembered that. Or the world reminded him of that. In this case, "the world" took the form of a bulldog who was approaching, and Karl reached out to pet it. He looked up as the owner arrived.:: "What's his name?"

"Humphrey," Matthew replied as he got a grip on the end of the leash again. "Sorry 'bout that. He's friendly, really likes attention." Humphrey leaned against the man's chair so he could be rubbed and Matthew chuckled. "He likes you. Of course, he likes everybody. Not a mean bone in his body."

"It's good to have a friendly dog." ::Karl pet Humphrey once again, since the animal was now asking for it. He had considered getting a pet before but given the depression and the odd hours had decided against it.:: "How old is he?"

"Um, about three?" Matthew guessed. "I adopted him from an animal shelter about a year ago and they didn't know his exact age." He knelt down and lovingly rubbed Humphrey's wrinkled head. "I doubt age will ever matter to him, though; he always acts like a puppy, no matter what."

"Still young then." ::Karl thought that the dog should have many years ahead of him, then, which was good. And since they were now making small talk, he asked another question.:: "A shelter around here?" ::Here meaning the City.::

"Yeah, here in the city," Matthew told him. "My, uh, aunt thought I could use the company. She worries," he added.
Standing so close Matthew could feel his power reacting and he tried to get a hold on it. That was one of the bad things about his power: it gave him a look into people's lives, their private and personal moments. He didn't like the idea of prying and he doubted anyone would like it either.

::Karl was unaware of the other man's power beginning to flare, and he concentrated on the dog. It was easier than letting his thoughts drift as they tended to back towards Tanya lying unconscious in the hospital before passing away.:: "It's good to have family that worries about you."
