Genesis had grown used to chilly weather, especially since she'd been in the Northeast for almost a month now. It was a long way from seventy-degrees-and-sunny San Diego, but then again...it was a long way from everything.
She'd found the bar through rumors once she got into town; you got close to people in hostels, and it was amazing what they started to talk about once the cheap beer started flowing. She'd just had to give up her bed there the night before- she was heading for a shelter unless she found some sort of odd job. There were always local places that needed cleaners or something for a night or two. As it was, she had enough to go inside somewhere warm and grab something to drink, and the rumored mutant bar was as good a place as any.
She walked through the detectors at the front; there wasn't a bouncer, but she didn't really expect there to be one, here. Either you were a mutant, or you weren't.
She ordered salt water at the bar. The bartender didn't blink an eyelid at the request, and she found a small table in a corner where she could sit and set down her bag for a second.

::The holidays were a depressing time when one had lost his family; Karl knew that depression was to be expected, and he also identified his slow descent. There was little he could do to stop the downward spiral completely; all he could do was slow it and keep close tabs on himself. He was drinking more this time of year, although he considered it justified, and he sought out the Hellfire Club because he could blend a bit easier there.
It was crowded, although thankfully not too festive, and he approached the bar to order a Tom Collins. What he needed next was a place to sit, and he scanned the area for an empty table.::

Genesis pulled out a book she'd brought with her from a local library. It was strange reading in a bar, she knew, but you didn't travel a lot without looking strange sometimes. To top it off, she just didn't care.
The book was by Margaret Atwood, an author she usually liked, when she got a chance to read books. She didn't stay around many towns long enough to check anything out, and it wasn't like she was going to blow $10 on something she'd read maybe once. No place to live, no place to keep books. It was the downside of what she was doing.
She took a drink and turned to the first chapter.

::Karl paid for his drink but was unhappy to find that there were no empty tables, and that the bar, too, was crowded; it was one of those nights. As he had no desire to stand and drink, he would have to bite the proverbial bullet and find a table to join. Most tables had parties of two or more, but one young woman sat alone in the corner. That seemed his best choice, and so he crossed through the crowd, approached the table, and set his hand on the back of the chair opposite her.:: "Excuse me. Miss?"

She was halfway through the second paragraph when a voice louder then the rest and obviously directed at her interrupted her. She looked up to see a man both green and red eyed, and blinked at him in a little bit of surprise. Even with her own mutation, some people still caught her off guard. "Yes?"

::Karl ignored momentary suprise, as he was used to it. He gestured over his shoulder at the large crowd of people and the complete lack of empty tables.:: "Would you mind if I shared your table? The place is nearly filled to capacity."

She shrugged. "Whatever mochas your latte." It really didn't matter much to her, she was generally alone as it was.

"Thanks," Karl replied, as he would rather sit than stand. Pulling out the chair, he seated himself and took a sip of his Tom Collins.::

She took a drink of her salt water and went back to her book, although it was a little strange doing that since she had a 6 foot plus person sitting across from her, and she kept eying him over the edge of her book. She wasn't all that sociable, but he was kinda hard to ignore.

::Karl tried to concentrate on drinking and the atmosphere, although he wasn't much for the club scene; he didn't accept being a widower. Not to mention that her attempts at viewing him surreptitiously were not as successful as one might hope. After several minutes, he set down his glass and remarked,:: “It isn’t body paint.”

Well, that was that. He'd apparently noticed her regard, not that she was really trying to be sly about it. "You or me?" she asked, putting down the book. He'd made it a statement, but they both still had outward mutations.

"Me," ::Karl replied, although he had noticed the pattern of her skin.:: "I'm sre yours isn't either."

"No, it's not. I'm just not used to sitting across from 6 foot strangers," she said, taking a drink.

::Karl was taller than that, though he needn't correct her, as it hardly mattered.:: "I could introduce myself so I'm no longer a stranger, since I can't shrink."

That made her laugh into her water. "That'd be a hell of a mutation if you could."
