"I think you see them," ::Pietro told her, because his faults were obvious as far as he was concerned.:: "I don't think you fault me for them."

"Then why pull away from me?" she asked, now genuinely confused.

::That was where this discussion had come from, and where it was going. She apparently had not believed Pietro when he had told her that it was not about her.:: "Rossignol, I'm not pulling away from you. I have a comfort zone."

That was not what she was talking about. "So much of one that you tiptoe around me now?" she asked, her tone a mix of surprise and sadness. "I had thought we were beyond where we were when we met."

::Pietro thought that they had resolved *this* issue at supper earlier in the summer; apparently, he had misread her cues then, and he attributed this to his inability to fully comprehend women.:: "Rossignol, I haven't been tiptoeing around you. We have been busy."

She opened her mouth to speak, then stopped and shook her head, looking down at their linked hands instead of up at him. "What I want to say will hurt you, so I don't want to say it."

"Speak," ::Pietro encouraged her. If he would get hurt, then he would get hurt. She already thought whatever it was, and that warranted discussion.::

She took a breath, speaking reluctantly. "You promised before that we wouldn't be stuck in one place in our relationship for a long time. But we are, and we have been."

::It was a fair enough point, Pietro had to concede. He did not necessarily agree, particularly as they spent so much time apart from one another, and he though that they were making emotional progress if nothing else, but he comprehended the point. Not saying what first came to mind, as he rarely did, he nodded slightly.::

"I don't know why that bothers me," she continued with difficulty. "But it does."

::Pietro was silent for a moment, before querying,:: "Being where we are bothers you?"

That was another loaded question. She stopped and thought for a long minute before replying. "Can I explain something before I answer that?"

::Pietro nodded a single time; he would listen to whatever she had to say.:: "Yes."

She half knew what his reaction would be to her bringing up this subject, but it was better said then not. "Before I was adopted and taken to New York, men were...creatures to me, as a kid. Not in the way that it is for most kids, where the neighborhood boys had cooties. Men were...evil." She had no other way to say it. "As an adult, that wasn't the case so much because I had more reason, but still..." She shook her head, a small smile on her face briefly. "Being sent to a place where the people in authority were men was...different." The Morlocks had Callisto as their leader, which made it easier for Typhoid to handle. "I came here, and I...learned they weren't evil, after a while. And I met Tim." She flinched involuntarily because she knew for certain he didn't like this subject at all.
"He was my first relationship, and it was physical, and it was a rush. I'd never been able to touch a person before. And it's the only experience I've got." She took a breath. "So, no, it doesn't bother me to be where were are now. I love you. But part of me is always saying that I'm going to lose you unless it's physical, too."
It sounded ridiculous, even to her ears. But even a over two years later, previous experience was defeating her.

::Pietro absorbed that silently, and he did what came naturally, that was to squeeze her hands in reassurance. As he was the one who insisted that they not move to a more physical stage,it would be hypocritical of him to then end the relationship on those grounds. He was many things, but a hypocrite was not on that admittedly lengthy list.:: "I am not going anywhere, Rossignol."
