Character Name: Erik "Magnus" Lehnsherr
Alias: Magneto
Powers: Magneto is capable of manipulating any substance with chemically metallic properties. He does this by generating magnetic fields. This allows him to fly, conduct electricity, liquefy and solidify metals, manipulate iron in blood and put up protective shields.
He also possesses an above human intellect with knowledge specifically involving genetics and engineering.
Background/Bio: Erik Lehnsherr was born to a Jewish family in Poland in the 1940s. His childhood was normal for the time and place, insignificant until he was about thirteen years old. With the Nazi invasion, his family consisting of his parents and sister were taken to a concentration camp. As he was parted from his family, Erik began to fight back with what was the first manifestation of his mutant powers. He was quickly knocked unconscious, apparently unaware of his powers until much later. His parents and sister were killed and Erik was sent to Auschwitz.
While there he worked in the Sonderkommando, bargaining a few more days or weeks of life in return for the job of disposing of the bodies of those killed at the camp. His powers remained dormant for these years. He remarkably remained alive for two years before escaping the death camp. He fled war-torn Europe for the United States, arriving when he was sixteen.
Working odd jobs, Erik managed to survive on his own. With decent food and rest, his powers re-emerged. He discovered that he could manipulate metals and began to use this to his advantage. It also presented a problem however; Erik began wondering if there were others like him.
It was such a curiosity that caused him to encounter Charles Xavier. Finding that they both had extraordinary gifts, the two became quick friends and, within half a year, formed a relationship.
They were the first years of contentment he'd had since his childhood. They attended university together, debating on the potential fate of their kind as they simply knew they wouldn't be the only ones.
At the age of twenty-five, Erik met Magda, also a Holocaust survivor. As he found himself drifting apart from Charles, Erik was very drawn to the young woman. The two married and for a few years enjoyed the illusion of normalcy. Magda was not a mutant however and their relationship became strained at best when she discovered that he was. He couldn't sit idly by and watch potential persecution while Magda was more than happy to ignore it as though it didn't exist.
The two divorced when Erik was thirty. They parted on amiable terms, determining that they carried no malice toward one another though they also didn't wish to stay in contact. Erik, never having lost contact with Charles, approached him again and the two picked up where they'd left off.
Charles had determined he wanted to use his fortune to start a school for young mutants. Erik agreed with this philosophy and the two began making plans for such an institution. A couple of years after the Academy opened, Erik was given the news that he had two children by Magda, six year old twins Pietro and Wanda. Unable to care for them any longer, Magda contacted him for help and, after discussing it with Charles, the two agreed to take them in as the first supposed students of the Academy.
Time passed agreeably for Erik as he helped Charles with the Academy. However as they saw more and more students, Erik also began seeing the persecution of mutants more and more. Ideologies between Charles and Erik clashed and oftentimes Erik would head off for an unknown destination and not return for weeks.
It was while he was away that Charles was in a car accident which paralyzed him. Erik returned but with the added stress of Charles's recovery, they were constantly at odds. Erik couldn't take a pacifist stance and was furious that Charles would do nothing to stop history from repeating itself.
He left, forming the Brotherhood as a way to combat the growing anti-mutant violence. Thinking the best way to fight fire was with fire, he began recruiting for his organization.
Through the years that followed, the Brotherhood gained members and lost some but always existed. It was through it that Erik met Mystique. The two became acquainted beyond being occasional lovers but with Mystique's sacrificing herself and being 'cured', apparently Erik's abandonment of her was too much to stand.
Erik has continued to drift in and out of Academy business and Charles's life. As it stands he is regrouping the Brotherhood and contemplating the next course of action.
Appearance/Personality: Erik is a man in his early sixties with silver hair cut in a basic style and blue eyes with coloring that suggested his hair was dark when he was younger. He is in remarkable physical shape for a man his age. A tattoo remains on his arm, his number from Auschwitz. His personality is volatile, sometimes mellow enough and sometimes incredibly violent, but Magneto is never unguarded. He is rather tight-lipped about his history or his personal business but is fiercely protective of those he cares about despite being cold and emotionally distant to most that cross his path.
