Erik walked a short way in the rain beside Charles until they reached their destination. Running a hand through his damp hair Erik leant against a wall with an impatient tap of his feet.
"If this is about John - he started it." The petulant tone seemed strangely fitting with the elegant articulation.
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:07pm
::Xavier quirked his eyebrow up, not expecting that response from Erik. He shook his head.:: "That wasn't the reason I had been searching for you, although since you mention it, I don't care who started it. You're three times his age, Erik, you know better than to respond in such a childish manner. Or to let it get to you. They're students. They are discovering how to control their powers. They're under the inflluence of surging hormones, and many of them have family problems too."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:09pm
Erik heard nothing beyond the words he repeated.
"Three times?" He wagged a finger at his friend. "Charles, you needn't remind me."
He mocked being insulted, his amusement at John's outrage finally channelled into something more worthwhile.
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:11pm
::Xavier shrugged his shoulders, long since used to Erik's mock conceit.:: "You should be proud of your age, Erik. You've certainly earned it. Many of them were very fine years indeed."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:14pm
A winning grin and a sparkle in his eyes hit Erik simultaneously.
"I well remember." A moment of long-buried memories passed before Erik pushed himself off the wall and paced a little.
"What did you want me for then, old friend?"
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:16pm
::Xavier smiled softly too, his thoughts drifting back to years long since passed, but never forgotten. Bringing himself back to the present, he ignored Erik's emphasis on the world 'old,' and simply started with his business.:: "Actually, I wanted to discuss Nimrod with you."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:23pm
Erik stopped his pacing.
"Ah," was all he could think to say. Wherever Charles's conversation was headed, it couldn't be of good cheer.
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:24pm
"Indeed," ::Erik was correct; this conversation would be far from cheery. However, it was necessary, and the sooner it was discussed, the better. He folded his hands in his lap, looking up at his friend.:: "How much do you know about his reasons for being here? The more you know, the less I have to explain."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:32pm
Erik started his reply with a sigh, moving back to the security of the wall. He looked up into the rafters of the siding only to have a raindrop land on the bridge of his nose. Rubbing his face, he looked back to Charles.
"He gave me some data - basic abilities, techincal status." The blantant history of the unit bothered Erik the most. "Also his claim to fame - 170-odd mutants captured or killed, a slice of them Class 5 and above. And his history seems a trifle... Futuristic."
He used the term loosely, but it seemed it fit.
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:34pm
::Xavier nodded, sighing softly as well. It appeared as though, then, they were on a similar page information-wise. Erik appeared to have taken the news much better than he had expected, considering the fact that Nimrod wasn't in a pile somewhere and Erik hadn't turned red in the face.:: "Then this discussion shouldn't come as a surprise. I wish your input on the question of what to do with him."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:37pm
Erik's immediate reaction was to drop a 16-ton weight on him, and he was certain that reaction was so strong Charles would feel it whether he liked it or not. A moment later, however, he managed to cool such urges.
"He's dangerous, but not volatile." Erik tilted his head to one side and added, in a lower register, "Until he makes up his mind about us."
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:40pm
"That's what concerns me. If he comes to the decision that mutants are people too, we've taught a valuable lesson and made the world a better place. But should he come to the less rational, albeit more prevelant, conclusion that we are a threat to the rest of the population, he could cause so much damage" ::Xavier slowly let out a breath he had been holding, the possibilities playing out before his eyes.::
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:43pm
The nature of Nimrod's being caused a sudden thought to rush to Erik. With a moment of calculated thought, he enquired.
"Can you read his mind, what with his biological makeup?"
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:48pm
"In theory, I could. I haven't tried yet. Unfortunately, other concerns had taken precedence." ::Xavier closed his eyes, searching the grounds to see if he could find Nimrod's mental presence. If he could find it, then he could read the young man's thoughts. After a few minutes of searching, he nodded, opening his eyes. It was fainter than those of the other students, but there.:: "I should be able to. Optimally, I'd like to have him consent, because it would be a show of good faith on his part."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:51pm
"Especially if he can sense you doing so without permission." Erik smiled slowly. "Not everyone enjoys you prodding around their thoughts."
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 8:52pm
"Not everyone is given the benefit of being made aware of my presence," ::Xavier replied. It was attempted to be lighthearted, but considering the circumstances of the discussion, it came off more solemn, and possibly sinister, than he had intended.:: "Your point is well-taken, of course."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 8:58pm
Erik nodded contentedly.
"I understand he's interested in taking a more active role here with the children?"
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 9:00pm
::Xavier nodded again, his hands falling to his legs. He began drumming his fingers on his knee.:: "Which leads me to the second dilemma. Even if he were to stay, teaching our children...I do not like the idea. But that could simply be prejudice on my part."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 9:04pm
"If it is you're not alone."
Erik sank against the wall and frowned as another droplet hit his scalp.
"We could give him mathematics - nobody wants that job."
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 9:07pm
::Xavier looked up at Erik, an incredulous look on his face.:: "You're serious, aren't you?"
::Xavier rubbed at his chin in consideration.:: "It would be a subject wherein it would be nearly impossible to insert prejudiced opinions...and he is of a mechanical mind..."
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 9:08pm
"Oh, and physics," Erik added with a smirk, "that's boring as hell."
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 9:11pm
"I happen to find physics fascinating. And considering your abilities, I think you should as well. Do you think we should give him the teaching ability, then?"
Posted by Erik Magnus Lensherr on Jan 20, 2007, 9:13pm
Erik's brow furrowed for a moment, then relaxed.
"In a word? Yes."
Posted by The Man on Jan 20, 2007, 9:14pm
"Very well. I'll speak to him about it later today." Xavier paused for a moment, in thought. "That's two of the hard science regents exams accounted for, at least. Three, technically."

Typhoid hid near the deck, listening to the pieces of the conversation that she could hear over the patter of the rain. She knew it was wrong to spy- she'd hate it if someone did it to her- but this was about Nimrod. And whether Nimrod knew it or not, she liked being around him. It was just...refreshing, not to have someone who could be excessively emotional around you all the time. That...and he was the only one she could touch without causing him harm. Whether she liked it or no, that automatically made her feel somewhat indebted to him.
A branch under her foot snapped with a resounding crack as she shifted her weight, and she froze.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 1:08am
::Hearing the snap of a branch, Xavier quickly turned his head in the direction of the noise. He could make out part of a student's head and sighed softly, wondering how much of their conversation she had heard.:: "We try not to eavesdrop here, so please come out."
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 1:15am
"You can't possibly think that he's going to hurt us," Typhoid came out from her hiding place. "You can't just give up on him that easily." Her fists were clenched, and a few trees near the deck started to shake and shed wood dust.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 1:17am
::Although Xavier listened to her words, his attention was split between them and the deck, which had begun to shake; the dust particles visible in the air. She needed to calm down.:: "I don't know how much of that conversation you heard, but he'll be teaching both physics and mathematics, so I can guarantee you that neither Mister Lehnsherr nor I have given up on him."
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 1:22am
"Then why the hell do you think he's dangerous, if you let him teach?" Her accent grew thicker, as did the dust.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 1:27am
::Xavier braced himself, prepared to take action if she was unable to curb her emotions very soon. He didn't want anybody to get hurt, not her, not another student or Erik, and not himself, if at all possible.:: "Part of that is a personal matter that I'm not at liberty to discuss. But we're letting him teach as both a learning experience for him, and because he's knowledgable in the subject matter so he'll be an asset in that regard."
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 1:38am
Up until that point Typhoid had been mostly unaware of what she was doing, besides being royally pissed. She sucked in a breath, and began to cough as she inhaled wood dust....wood dust??
Wait....that was not right.
She looked at the trees and the deck, shaking and beginning to dissolve, and finally acknowledged the sensation of those thousand pain pinpricks all over her skin - the sensation that would occur just before she let go of her power completely.
Holy hell.
Her fists clenched tighter, this time not in anger- though she was still furious- but in reaction to a mad attempt to stop what she was doing. She couldn't stop it when it had gotten this far, never been able to.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 1:48am
::The cloud of dust had risen, beginning to swirl in the breeze and rain, making it harder for him to see her. He needed to keep his concentration. He felt a change from her, as she undoubtedly realized what she was doing. He wheeled his chair closer to her, slowly in the cloud of dust and against the shaking deck, wanting to help her in any way he could.:: "Everything will be all right, Typhoid."
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 2:00am
Her fists at her sides, Typhoid saw the professor wheel towards her, close to the deck...way to close. She looked at him with eyes that were almost a plea, if not for the anger still in them. Her hair was beginning to take on the white streaking it got with excessive use of her power.
"Get...away...from...there." she warned through clenched teeth. "I...can't stop it..."
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 2:03am
::Xavier looked from her, to Erik, to the deck, and then back to her. He wasn't going to leave her in the middle of the area where she could injure herself. He gave Erik a push towards the door to the mansion, before addressing her again. But, believing the sincerity of her words, he didn't move closer. He wished that he knew more about her powers so that he could be of some practical use in the situation.:: "Promise me you'll be able to come inside, Typhoid."
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 2:17am
She heard the professor's words, but was unable to respond. She clamped down as hard as she could on her power, but it ran rampant though her head, prickling her skin with pain, forcing its way out. It had no direction, nothing it planned on doing but making sure that everything within its reach was dust by the time it was done.
"So give it a plan."
Patrick. The voice of her old friend, dead now, dug its way out into her thoughts. The statement in context had nothing to do with the present, but it gave her something to lock onto. Give it a plan.
Now to try to get the message to Xavier.
"Have to...find something to....focus on," she grated.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 2:22am
::He heard her grated words, although they were barely audible over the shaking. He looked around the area of the deck, his attention falling on the patio furniture. If she needed a focal point, he'd found one. Uncertain if she could hear him, he thought it worth a try.:: "The patio furniture, Typhoid. Focus on that," he called to her.
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 2:30am
'....atio furniture...."
She could barely hear the words over the din in her head, but the part of her still listening somehow got the message. Furniture...furniture....
She grated her teeth together, trying to lasso her power once again, doing the mental equivalent of stamping her foot and screaming at it to get its attention. Here, over here....
For once it fell for the ploy. She grabbed hold of it as hard as she could, and pushed it away, towards the objects that some part of her head still identified as furniture, and sank to her knees, her hands over her head, screaming as it left her and went towards them with the sensation of needles piercing her skin.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 2:38am
::He was immediately grateful he wasn't in the path of the furniture as he saw the outlines of energy passing through the dust clouds towards her focal point. His immediate concern was he well-being and he wheeled closer to her, cringing slightly when he heard the noises of the furniture being destroyed. Not wanting to touch her, less it lead to more difficulties, he settled for being close.:: "Are you all right? Can I get you anything? Or do anything?"
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 2:49am
Her hands were shaking, still held over her head, and she didn't look up from her crouched position. She'd talked to the others, knew he was a telepath, knew that if she either didn't respond or thought something hard enough he'd have to use his power to hear what she said.
Yeah, she thought, miserable, either cure me or kill me.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 2:53am
::Her thoughts came in quite clearly, although both the intensity and the message were unexpected. She was too young to simply give up. He kept his focus on her, waiting for her to move from her position of defense...or of release:: "I shan't do the latter, but I'll see what I can do about the former."
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 3:01am
The vehemence of her own thoughts caught her by surprise, as did his response. Cure her...? One part of her cursed her for even thinking it, the other prodded her to consider it, and that made her even more disgusted with herself. That she'd go and run from something that was a part of her.
She un-curled from her crouch, her movements hesitant, but her voice strong.
"Cure me..? That's not possible anymore, everyone knows that. The lab's gone. Leech is MIA. It's not..." She began again. "No one can cure us anymore."
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 3:10am
"Not in the sense of laboratories, no. But I think your concerns are in unpredicability, not in the abilities themselves. Once they're completely under your conscious control, the random factor is gone. Or cured, if you prefer to think of it that way." ::Xavier watched her carefully, his eyes tracing her body for signs of bruising:: "Are you all right?"
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 3:19am
Typhoid got to her feet. Slowly. "I think so. Just cramped. My headache's gone, but that always happens when I use my power." Running fingers through her hair, she pulled some around in front of her face, fingering the white streaking. "This'll fade in a few days. Always does." She sighed. "If it's one thing I know about it's how to take care of myself after I lose control."
After a glance at the pile of dust that used to be the patio furniture, she promptly paled, realizing that she'd been a hair's breadth away from doing that to Xavier, the building, and probably most of the trees in the nearby vicinity. She chose to hide her shock behind, as usual, a joke. "Though I REALLY wouldn't want to try to use the patio furniture just now."
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 3:29am
::Xavier turned to look behind him at the dustpile and nodded in agreement. The fact that he had nearly been reduced to such a state wasn't lost on him, but this wasn't the time or place to discuss it. She felt terrible enough as it was, and it was admirable that she'd been able to redirect her powers once she was that far gone.:: "Perhaps tonight the elves will cobble us new furniture. Otherwise, I'll take a trip to the store this weekend." ::He, too, knew how to respond with humor.::
::He examined her carefully with his eyes, committing to memory what aftereffects she experienced, so he would know next time what to expect:: "Do you want to lie down for a bit?"
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 12:21pm
She smiled wanly at the professors joke. "No, I'm ok...I think I just....need some time alone." She took another glance at the remains of the furniture. "I'm sorry."
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 12:23pm
"It's all right. It's hardly the first time something like this has happened here, and I'm sure it won't be the last. If you don't mind, however, after you take your alone time, please check in with me so I know you're all right." ::He was simply concerned about her; she was knew and he wasn't 100% certain how she would handle meeting Nimrod later, or running into anybody else should his name come up in conversation::
Posted by Typhoid Mary on Jan 21, 2007, 12:30pm
"Alright." She was too worn out to protest. She turned to walk back towards the mansion, then cast a look at Lensherr and Xavier behind her, directing her comments at them both.
"And you're wrong about Nimrod. He's skilled, not dangerous. He wouldn't have let me touch him if he'd thought I'd hurt him." She turned away. "That's a risk no one has taken in a long time." Leaving the issue at that, she pulled the hood of her coat over her head and began the walk back to the mansion.
Posted by The Man on Jan 21, 2007, 12:34pm
::He dearly hoped that he was wrong about Nimrod; that all of the concern would be for naught. But he couldn't simply take that risk without proper precaution. Because if humanity would have built a machine like Nimrod, that means that safety must be the highest priority. Xavier kept his eyes on her as she disappeared into the mansion. She simply didn't know all of the facts, and he couldn't tell them to her. Hopefully, she would be able to put the incident behind her so that everybody could live and work together.::

She looked at the trees and the deck, shaking and beginning to dissolve, and finally acknowledged the sensation of those thousand pain pinpricks all over her skin - the sensation that would occur just before she let go of her power completely.
Holy hell.
Her fists clenched tighter, this time not in anger- though she was still furious- but in reaction to a mad attempt to stop what she was doing. She couldn't stop it when it had gotten this far, never been able to.
