Alias: Storm
Real Name: Ororo Munroe
Powers: True to her name, Ororo can create storms and manipulate weather of any type, either creating bad weather or reversing it. She has a deep connection to Earth's environment, and can feel when a particular weather pattern is wrong or inconsistant, and also know how to correct it. She is able to manipulate lightning, often employing it in battle. She is also able to manipulate wind currents around her, giving her the ability to "fly" in a manner of speaking.
Personality: Ororo's personality tends to be black and white-she either believes in something, or she does not, and so does not understand those who ride the fence about any particular subject. She can be very open and easy going with her friends and with students, but if you cross her, or do something to harm her or the ones she loves, it will be a very long time before she will trust you again. She has an extraordinary temper which she takes pains to hide, mostly because of the emotional triggers involved with her powers. She takes charge when she finds it necessary, but she is also willing to let others take the lead. She is generally very suspicious of those she does not know.
Dress Sense: Very clean and polished. Usually she can be found wearing varying shades of blue, combined with black or grey.
Looks: Very small boned, with short white hair and a slim figure.
Played By: Halle Berry
Education: Graduated from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters with honors, went on to NY State University and graduated with a bachelors degree in education.
Other Traits: She normally carries a set of lockpicks with her. Occasionally she displays an accent when speaking, but that is usually only when agitated.
Background/History:
Ororo grew up in Kenya until the age of 13. The small but significantly populated area she and her parents lived in was very superstitious, and the fact that Ororo was born with purely white hair did nothing to help. She grew up viewed as different, or by some, as a witch. As a result of her isolation, Ororo took to her schoolwork, and in her free time, studied the culture and language of the Western countries, particularly the United States and Latin America. In this way, she learned to speak English, and eventually taught her parents as well, though they were reluctant to learn and still do not speak it well.
Because her family could not make a good enough living in Kenya, they moved to the United States and settled in Texas, a move that elated Ororo. But her parents insisted on adhering to Kenyan tradition and superstition, and when Ororo developed her powers at 13 and a half, they turned a cold shoulder to her, convinced her powers were evil. This was a rejection she could not stand, and at fourteen, she dropped out of school and ran away. She worked her way across the country hitchhiking and stealing, depending upon other thieves and occasionally making money by selling drugs as she made her way north, and eventually was wanted for grand theft auto and drug violations in several states. Through her travels, she found limited control of her growing powers over the weather, though she could only control them if she was calm, a fact which did not complement her lifestyle. It was during this time in her life that a fellow car thief nicknamed her “Storm.”
Just as she turned fifteen, she was arrested for theft in New York state, and was not granted bail because of the several previous warrants out for her arrest. Reacting to her anger, her powers created the worst strike of tornadoes in the history of New York state, causing almost 40 separate tornadoes to rip cities in the state apart. As a point of personal revenge, she created a storm of ice inside the jail on purpose.
The outpouring of power brought her to the attention of Charles Xavier, headmaster of a school for mutants. Using his abilities, he tracked her down, and in return for making her outstanding warrants disappear, she promised to accompany him to his school, both to learn to control her powers and to continue her education. She agreed, though reluctant, feeling she had nothing left to lose.
At the school, and with the assistance of Charles Xavier, she learned to control her abilities. Though she also met Erik Lensherr, before he abruptly left, most of her education and instruction came from Xavier himself, as his calm temperament seemed to suit Ororo better then Lensherr's quick temper, and in the end Ororo saw very little of Erik at all, instead being buried in her studies, much as she had been as a child.
During this time, she met and developed close friendships with other mutant students as well: Hank McCoy, Scott Summers, and Jean Grey. Although there were occasionally personality conflicts, the four have maintained a good friendship, both as fellow teachers and as X-Men.
It was also during this time that she met Lensherr's children, Pietro and Wanda, and developed a friendship with them both. As they got older, and all began to train to become X-Men, Ororo and Pietro dated, and although their relationship progressed to the point of extremely deep involvement, neither felt ready to take it any farther. Ororo lost contact with the twins after they left the Mansion, though they all remained friends, and still are to this day.
In the midst of training, Ororo completed her high school education at 19 and left for University to obtain her teaching degree, returning to the Mansion at the age of 21 to attempt to give Xavier back something of what she had been given. It was during this time that she met Remy LeBeau, also known as Gambit, during his all too brief stint with the X-Men. The two shared common backgrounds (albeit of a criminal nature), and became as close as brother and sister. They maintained that relationship into adulthood.
Ororo eventually became both an established teacher and X-Man, and her sense of camaraderie only grew as they all lived through the events of Liberty Island. The addition of Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine, as a reluctant member of the team chafed at Ororo, particularly because the man came off as having too much attitude and at the same time riding the fence on the issues between humans and mutants. It was a fact Ororo could not stand at first, but Logan's devotion to the young mutant Rogue eventually won her over.
Ororo's natural suspicion of humans was only deepened by the events of Alkali Lake, and the loss of Jean stunned and saddened her, as it did them all. From that point forward, she vowed to herself that while she held a suspicion of humanity, she would not act upon it, instead becoming one of the most stalwart supporters of Xavier's ideals. No other mutant could be lost because of the prejudice and hatred between humans and mutants, not the way Jean had been.
When Scott withdrew from being an active leader of the X-Men, Storm took over by default, and amidst fights with Logan regarding new trainees and the new threat of the Cure, it was all she could do to hold the team together. When Xavier was lost at the hands of the Phoenix, her resolve almost broke, causing her and Hank to consider closing down the school. When Angel walked in, needing help, she knew that no matter who taught her, the school had to stay a safe and open place for mutant children to continue to come to, no matter the cost. It was a resolve she continued to hold to after the events of Alcatraz Island.
