"I didn't," Emily said. "The Professor found me somehow and contacted my parents, suggesting training for my powers."

Tron arched an eyebrow. Xavier was a telepath, and a powerful one, but if the extent of his powers was that large... "I'm glad you're not a runaway. There are supposed to be a lot of those around the school. It's sad, really."

"From what I understand, most kids at Xavier's are," Emily nodded. "It really is sad... Constantly reminds me of how it could have been, had I been a tad less lucky." She paused, thinking over her words. "I think I just said some nonsense..."

"Nonsense? You mean about being lucky?" Tron had never considered it unlucky that he was a mutant, only unfortunate that others seemed to dislike him because of it.

"I don't know what I mean..." Emily put her forehead on her hand, staring at the table. "I wanted to say... well, I can't really call it luck, can I? Having an understanding family isn't a matter of luck..."

"I don't know...I've always thought there was some sort of chance to it. I mean, we can't pick our parents," he commented.

"That's true, but..." Emily considered her vocabulary for a moment. "It's just that the concept of luck seems so trivial when applied to family," she tried to explain. "I could refer to luck when I get the exam question I wanted... or when I get winning numbers in lottery. Something small like that. Family doesn't fit in." She met his eyes. "Am I making any sense?"

"You mean family doesn't seem like something you should trivialize, but there's no way to describe being happy that they don't push you away, except for 'luck' or 'fortune'," he said. "I think I understand, a little. You miss your family?"

"Uh-uh," Emily shook her head. "But that's probably just because I visited them recently," she grinned. "Generally I'm not used to being away from home."

"'Home' had a few meanings for me over the past few years, but I'm not used to living away from my parents, either," he replied, nodding in understanding. "It feels like you've just been thrown out of a plane with no chute, doesn't it?"

"Exactly," Emily said. "Especially combined with the need to adjust to the fact that you're a mutant and have powers..."

"And that as a mutant most people won't like you anyways," Tron finished.

Emily smiled and gave a small sigh. "Well, you know the story," she nodded. A glance outside told her the sky became clouded while they were sitting there. "Geez, where's all the sun?" she wondered.

He peered out the window, finishing the last of his pasta. "I don't know, but it looks like rainclouds to me."

"Looks that way, yes," Emily said, losing some of her cheerfulness. She finished her pasta as well and drank the rest of the pineapple juice. "Does that mean our city trip is over?"
