Remy's bike took him and Shade to a pizza place Gambit knew was good. She suggested a pizzeria, and he liked the idea, so they ended up here, on the second floor, taking a booth by the window that looked out over the street.

She took off her jacket and draped it over the chair, taking a fascinated look out of the window as she sat down. "That’s what I call a pretty place" she said beaming.

Gambit's smile was as wide as hers. She was a tricky personality for him, and a rather challenging companion - something he hadn't experienced for quite a while - and making right guesses about what she could like exhilarated him as if she was a complex lock he had to pick.
"Glad you like it, chere," he said, summing up all that went through his head. "As far as I know, pizzas here are just as good."
He gave her a menu, taking another one for himself.

"Good." she said, taking the menu from him with a broad smile.
She brushed a hand behind her ear absent mindedly and had a look inside, leafing through it, until after some seconds she realized she had not taken in what she was reading. She started again, shortly looking up from the corners of her eyes to see what he was doing. He was a nice guy, she noticed, more than nice actually. Still she felt like a teenager in a way and was slightly annoyed with herself about that.
"Hm..." she said, concentrating on the menu again. "This one sounds good."

"Indulge yourself, then," Remy smiled.
A waitress arrived and took their orders. Remy added soda to that, and they were left alone again. He glanced at the street outside, resting his chin on propped-up hands with fingers locked.
"Funny, I don't get out dat much lately," he noted almost absent-mindedly.

She followed his gaze down the street, watching the cars rush past.
"Same here" she said. "I’ve not been out much since I arrived in the city actually. Been out to Central Park a couple of times but that’s about it." And certainly not to a restaurant with some guy, she added in thought.

She grinned at that. "Exactly." she said. "Well... how long? Since September ." She didn’t remember the exact date, but it had been in the first half of the month.

"Dieu!" he shook his head in disbelief. He was used to constantly moving from place to place, to exploring new domains thoroughly so that he could orient himself perfectly in urban atmosphere. He felt blind unless he knew every brick in the neighborhood - it came with the lifestyle of a thief. What Shade said to him now, was really hard to grasp. "Ya seriously gotta catch up on your New York visits now, cheri."

"I think so" she said. "I still feel somewhat like a tourist. I guess these last months have just been somewhat... busy."
That was a strange way of describing it. She had mainly stayed at the mansion or had been moving between the mansion and the lair. Between that, there had been lessons to be prepared but that had not eaten up all of her free time which, as she now noticed has mostly spent somewhere on the grounds.

He fastidiously avoided the word 'if'. Tracking Sinister down and staying in shadow couldn't be that bad, not at this time when Sinister wasn't tracking Gambit himself - and Gambit would have felt it if Sinister did.

"You're right, it is," Remy agreed. He thought for a second, looking outside, then turned back at her. "Basically, anythin' from de Empire State to Six Flags," Remy said. "The Village, Brooklyn Bridge, de usual stuff... But actually, dere's more to do in New York dan to see."
(( I'm not sure at the moment, but I think there's Six Flags somewhere across Hudson opposite of Westchester, so should be kinda close to the Institute ))

The waitress brought their pizzas and drinks, and only when he caught the smell, Remy realized how hungry he really was. It was a terrific idea to get a pizza, he thought - considering the long and tiring night that lay ahead of him, it just might be his last chance to grab a bite.
"My day jus' keeps gettin' better 'n better," he remarked before taking a bite of his pizza.

"So it's definitely Six Flags," Remy concluded, taking another bite of his pizza.
It felt good being around her. Most women in his company tended to don femme fatale images, trying to match his seductive charm, and doing so they looked artificial at times, while he was just being himself. And so was Shade right now - and he enjoyed her easy and natural attitude. He was not used to sincerity around him - not in his circles, and it almost made him dizzy like fresh mountain air gets people high with oxygen.

She realised she was actually having fun. Maybe she should listen to her intentions more often, she decided, intentions telling her to act on a whim instead of brooding over things for too long.

A tiny voice in her head began nagging her where her reason had disappeared to, but she didn’t listen. She had had enough brooding and thinking for a while. She just deserved some fun.

She slightly shook her head, grinning, before she continued eating again. He was so much fun to be around, she felt she was enjoying this a lot.
Then she looked up, mischief glinting in her eyes as she reconsidered what he had just said. "So what’s the oddest thing you ever did to surprise a girl then?" She knew it was an itchy question but her inner curiosity nagged her asking it, hoping he’d get she was just teasing him which would be obvious in the way she prompted the question

Remy drank from his glass, glancing at Shade above the rim. Then he set it down on the table. Telling people about his actual occupation was a kind of a test for him - he did it to people who seemed worth his time, to see if they turned away from him when they knew what he was. (That's if his mutation wasn't enough.) Looking at Shade, he still wasn't sure what side she was on.
"Guess I gotta stop buggin' ya wit' references t' my criminal past, present an' future," he said. "Let's change de subject."

She obviously had touched on a problematic subject she thought and she didn’t want the situation get awkward. She was enjoying his presence too much to let a stupid comment of hers ruin it. So shut the hell up with that Shade, her inner voice told her.

She shrugged. "This and that." she said. "Teaching, hanging around and the place is busy most of the time, so you’re actually never alone for long. I like it actually."
She wondered how to go on as it had not just been the institute to kep her busy these last few months but she had no intent of getting him involved or nagging him about her Brotherhood affiliations she was about to cut loose. This would most likely just end in brooding again and she didn’t want that.

The situation how he saw it was kind of difficult for him to explain his idea clearly, but he was hoping she would get his meaning.

The fact that he had been with the X Men surprised her. He seemed too much of a free spirit to be kept in one place for too long. "Anyways" she said, looking up, giving him a smile. "guess as I’m out of it there’s no reason in not trusting me."

She nodded, feeling immensely relieved. She didn’t see the Brotherhood that way either, but then again the ‘terrorist? thing had not exactly been her reason to quit.
"Good to know." she said with a smile. Her pizza, half eaten only up to that point, was no more than luke warm now, but she didn’t really care and took another bite.
"I’ve got to remember this place." she said. "That’s the best pizza I’ve had in months." And the best day in weeks, she added in thought.

Remy quirked a brow at her. "O-kay," he nodded slowly, "den, I guess, you wouldn't know 'bout de bad consequences of throwin' water at people."
He inhaled smoke, blowing it out upwards to the ceiling. He felt relaxed and cheerful - and he realized he owed it entirely to Shade's pleasant company. The thoughts of upcoming evening, night and the days that would follow it, doubled his enjoyment of this probably last peaceful evening he was having before his strenuous search began.

Gambit flipped the ash off his cigarette. Were she taught to observe minute details of human reactions, she would notice his pupils widen for a second - a reaction of a card player who got the winning card, of a cat that has its gaze fixed on its aim. Gambit felt his pulse quicken a little above its normal pace, but gave no sign. There was a slight itch in tips of his fingers - a need to charge and explode something.
"What is it dat attracts you, chere?" he wondered finally after a long pause, not breaking away from her gaze.

The question was straightforward and momentarily surprised her, but then again he simply seemed to be blunt as that. She felt the pace of her heartbeat quicken slightly as she watched him, trying to study what he was really thinking.

She caught herself having no idea about how late it actually was nor how long they had been sitting here and when he mentioned leaving she actually found a part of her not wanting this conversation to end already. She remembered him having mentioned something earlier, that he had things to do which would keep him from the Hellfire for some days. Again, she felt sad about that.
Still, she didn’t show. "Okay" she said.

Remy took his jacket, left the money on the table, and they went outside. He stopped in front of his bike, rubbing his neck.
"So, where do you want me to take you?" he asked and then inwardly winced at the double meaning of his words. Definitely a Freudian slip, he thought with a sigh.

It was nice to get outside again, the air was warm but not overly so. She streched after the long sitting.
"I don’t know." she said. "When I left the mansion I decided this would be a nice idea for a day off." She shot him a sideward glance. "I wouldn’t want to keep you from working or something." A part of her, a growing part, hoped for an answer along the lines that he didn’t mind another few hours off either.

The bike took them down the street, then onto the avenue towards mid-Manhattan. It was peak hour, but Remy casually jockeyed his way through the slow traffic, maneuvering between the cars.
He parked the bike on the sidewalk in front of the Empire State Building and stopped the engine.
"Whaddya think?" he asked, tilting his head up to look along the entire height of the building looming above them.

It was strange. She had been in New York for quite a few months now and had never been around much, not even having done the typical tourist ... things, she thought.
She followed his gaze up the building and curiosity started nagging her again. Fortunately she was not afraid of heights.
"Right now I think I hope you’re not claustrophobic so we can take the elevator." she said jokingly. "I wouldn’t be able to walk for days if we had to take the stairs."

"My need for physical exercise is no dat desperate," Remy laughed. "Let's go."
They went into the building, and Remy lead her past the immense line for the tickets and towards the personnel elevator.
"Wait here," he said and went off to find somebody of the building employees. He was extremely lucky: the first person who got into his sight was a janitor, obviously Latin American. Remy asked him of the whereabouts of a Mr. Johnson working here, and when he received an answer along the lines of "No speak English", the janitor's swipe card already changed its owner.
Remy returned to Shade, beaming. "We'll take de quick way," he said, putting the card to the reading device near the elevator.

Before she had been able to react he had disappeared in the crowd so she just stayed and waited, wondering what he might be up to.
Turning around when he returned he watched how he took out a card and used it on the elevator’s reading device. She grinned and shook her head. "I guess someone’s missing that already, right?" she asked amused.

The elevator brought them to the top floor, and they went outside to the observation desk, marching past the desk staff in full confidence.
Out there, Remy saw that the idea was good: so far, the view of the city was still clear and relatively bright, but in a minute, it would start getting dark rapidly, and they would be able to see how the streets slowly emerged from the twilight and created a network of lights.
"It'll get dark soon," he said, hinting at why he brought her there right now.

Shade stepped out of the elevator and pulled her jacket a little closer when the wind hit her. Grinning inwardly she followed him past the staff members. She walked closer to the rim of the observation desk and stepped up to the edge as far as she could, until she was standing directly in front of the boundary. Lifting one hand to let it run along the fencing which reached up taller than she was, she looked out over the city, momentarily awed by the view that spread underneath.
"This is beautiful." she exclaimed, not knowing where to direct her gaze first. "I never knew one could look out that far from here."

She looked at him over her shoulder and smiled before she turned her gaze towards the city again, starting to walk around, trying to take in everything. "I had no idea it was that big." she said across the wind referring to the size of the city.
He was right, it was already starting to get dim as she walked around, surprised she could even see Liberty Island in a distance.

Shade was about to let out a small gasp of surprise when he kissed her but was unable to. One hand still on the fencing she felt her grip around the metal bar tighten while her thoughts gathered speed rapidly until they became a blurry chaos inside her head. For a moment, she felt taken aback, unsure about how to react until her instincts kicked in and outruled her thinking and she started to respond to his kiss.

Feeling her lips answering his kiss, Remy pressed her closer to him. The first taste of her mouth sent his heart racing, and he could hear his pulse pounding in his ears, drowning out even the whistling wind. With his other hand he held her head, gently touching her cheek with his thumb. He couldn't remember the last time he was so excited, kissing a girl.

She let her eyes flutter close slowly, revelling on the feeling of his lips brushing against hers. She couldn’t remember when she had last felt like this and right now neither cared nor was capable of any such thought. Her hand let go of the banister and she slung both her arms around his waist, intent on keeping the close contact.

When he broke the kiss, Shade felt the immense urge of stepping closer to him again, but her head was starting to feel slightly dizzy as if she was in dire need of oxigen. She felt her cheeks were flushed and her heart beat had once more quickened as had her breath. Unable to respond she let herself get dragged with him.

While they were waiting for the elevator, Gambit could have sworn time went five times slower. The numbers of the dial indicating the floor were flickering fast, but it felt like he could count to ten between each two numbers. Shade's warm palm in his hand sent electric current through his entire body. As soon as they were inside and the elevator's doors closed behind them, he pulled her towards him and kissed her again.

She felt an intense tingle rush down her spine, not unlike the sensation she felt when her powers were about to kick in from nervousness, but this tingle was of a completely different nature. It felt like her thinking had completely ceased and when he pulled her towards him again, the slightest of moans escaped her when she felt her lips on his again.

Remy pressed her against the wall, holding her carefully lest he should crush her with his body. He kissed her mouth eagerly, letting his tongue caress hers. Now it seemed that seconds were flying past at the speed of light, and the elevator was moving too fast for them to be alone for some more time. He broke off the kiss and leaned his forehead against hers.
"I don't wanna let you go," he confessed.
(( This morning, it just dawned on me that an empty personnel elevator at this time and place is a highly improbably phenomenon, but oh well - I guess it's either a coincidence or a pure luck ))

His forehead leant against hers she felt she was again short of breath. Opening her eyes, she lifted a hand to let it trail through his hair, looking him into the eyes. This felt so good, so right in this moment that she smiled a little, her cheeks still flushed.

There was true regret in his voice and that made her heart leap as much as the prospect of him having to leave for the club soon made her sad. Her hand stopped trailing through his hair and she reached up to sling both her hands around his neck, letting her thumbs brush against the back of his head. "Any idea how to fill these few hours?" she asked, her eyes a shade darker, an inner voice yelling at her in a way that made clear she had no idea what had gotten into her all of a sudden.

Remy could see her excitement in her flush, the widened pupils of her eyes and ever so slightly trembling lips.
"Oh yes," he said, and at that moment the elevator stopped and its door opened. Remy took Shade by the hand once again, and they walked past the long line - Remy was pretty sure some of the people stood there long enough to see him and Shade enter the building as well as leave it.
He brushed the swipe card against his jeans, destroying his fingerprints, and placed the card on the desk in front of the security guy. "Here," he said, "I think someone's lost it." With that, they left the building and went outside.

Shade couldn’t hold back a smirk at the slightly confused look of the security guy, but Gambit pulled her away before she could see what the man’s further reactions would be.
Walking past the line of more or less patiently waiting visitors, she believed to see some of the people standing there look over to them. Probably some had seen them get out of the elevator. She bit her lip not to start laughing aloud.
When they stepped outside, the traffic noise sobered her a little but not much so.

Reluctantly, Remy let go off her hand, getting on the bike. At that moment, he knew only one place they could go to. He glanced at the cars driving by in slow peak-hour motion, switching over to the idea that he was about to drive through traffic, and his jumbled thoughts and fast-beating heart wouldn't help it.

She got on the bike and slung her arms around his waist to hold on. Her thoughts were in chaos, reflecting in a strange way the chaos that lay ahead of them in the street traffic. Grasping a little thought she noticed she did not care at all where he intended to take her as long as this meant his return to the club was pulled off for another few hours.

Pulling out into the street, Remy let the steady traffic current take control for some time while he was adjusting to it and to the evening lights. Then the bike increased speed, and very soon they were driving up to a tall building on the 7th. Remy drove into the underground parking and stopped the bike at its parking place.
He lead Shade to the elevator and, entering it, pressed 18. Glancing at the girl, he saw some confusion on her face. "I actually live here," he explained.

Remy winked at her. Even if Shade could indeed imagine it, he was fairly sure it would take time and patience for her to adapt to his partly underworld lifestyle. But he would leave it entirely up to her - it was her choice whether she could accept him for what he was. She was coping so far, and it made him feel better.
The elevator dinked, opening the doors.

When the elevator came to a halt, for a split second a thought of reason entered her brain. What are you doing Shade? Is that you? She wiped the thought away almost rashly. What was her after all? All the things that had happened over the last few months had told her more than anything that there were things she had thought to be impossible to happen to her. Many of these, especially in those last weeks, had involved feelings she would have wanted to avoid or shut away.
So in this moment, Shade spontaneously decided just to go with the flow, just to live life as it came. There had been enough troubles of late. She looked at him expectantly. "Lead the way." she said.
