"What?" Gambit asked, not starting the car yet and looking at Shade.

"That I feel like I don´t know what I´m up against," she said. This was nothing that should be too surprising, she thought. With that prophecy looming, people would be insecure left right and centre. "And that in the midst of all this, when it comes to this, I just remember enough to know that I got trapped like a rabbit, before you got me out." Because I was unable to defend myself, she added in thought. "And right now it´s ... painfully obvious."

"Well, Gambit is a formidable opponent," Remy pointed out, knowing his worth quite well. "Not too many people would've escaped. Speakin' of which, I dunno what we be up against, either. It don't matter, though - I come prepared anyway."

Shade chuckled. "That was not what I meant," she clarified. "I more meant like ... running in the trap of having a random, ungrateful mutant mess with my head ... not being ´able to swim´" she marked that with her fingers, but there was no mockery in it. This expression, she noticed, had born a different significance once. Referring to him somehow. Funny. What had Tante Mattie said? `Death cuts you easily´. She didn´t like that. Not at all. It read ´easy prey´ all over. "It´s kind of like...realising I´m an easy prey." she put her thoughts into words. "Yet."

"Well, you are," Gambit said. "Dat also mean dere's fewer people who want a piece of you, so you're not de center of attention. You're pretty much defenseless so far, but you're also anonymous."

"That didn´t keep my name off some mad people´s list," she said, glancing at him, no bitterness in her voice, but she was serious about it. That, and I don´t like hiding, her inner voice added. The reason for hiding all seemed to run down to a simple fact: being mutant. And the concept of having to hide, having to be careful because of belonging to an unaccepted minority...well, history had seen that countless of times. And it wasn´t pretty being caught in it.
It was thoughts that Shade with a memory might not have had to that extent. Shade who had escaped the sentinel. Shade who had herded the kids down to the tunnels when the mansion was attacked. Shade who had stood up against a man who had insulted her boyfriend for the colour of his eyes. But right now, even though bad things had not happened yet according to the prophecy, it was like being plunged into it. From a world where her mutation was accepted, had never been a problem, into one where it made her not only special but someone with the potential for an outcast.
"We better quickly remedy that." she concluded.

"Doin' so already as we speak," Gambit said. Glancing back, he pulled out onto the street. "Let's go get some practice, shall we?"

"Oh yes," Shade said, rubbing her hands, wondering what he had in mind. More running? She hoped it wasn´t that but something else. Sparring maybe. Or some climbing or testing out the weapons they had just bought. "Shooting?" she asked. "Fighting? Beating up Gambit for practise?"

"All of it," Gambit replied with a casual shrug. "I'm playin' by ear. With those nunchacks, though, gotta find ya a proper instructor, I can only show you how t' handle a bo staff."

Shade turned her head to face him. "Oh?" she said. "I´m sure we can add that to the list of things I want to try, can´t we?" So far she had seen him use the bo only shortly, only to block her way.

"Oh yes we can!" Gambit's face lit up with anticipation and excitement. "Say, ya ever been to a scrapyard?"

Shade noticed the change in his features and couldn´t help but grin at it, noticing once more that it looked good on him. "Ages back," she said, her grin broadening. She must have been 12 or 13 then she guessed, there had been a scrapyard outside her suburb, a bit of a bicycle ride away, far enough for her and her friends´ parents not liking them to go there.

"Scrambling around," Shade said, referring to years back. "building forts. And generally upsetting the guy that oversaw the scrap yard by carrying things around that he thought had to stay neatly stacked." Oh that had been fun. What the hell, Shade, she thought with an inward chuckle. The guy is goodlooking, a terriffic lover, and picks up on the inner kid stuff?Friggin´ lucky...
