"Oh yah," Gambit nodded, "I don' believe we ever discussed that?"

"I´ll tell you what." Shade said, leaning across the bed and placing down the glass carefully next to it, then crawled back on the bed. "I don´t care about politics right now. I lied. People sometimes do that." There was a somewhat serious undertone in that, as she moved closer, sneaking a hand around Gambit´s body, a tone as if she wanted to express something behind the obvious meaning.

"Don't I know dat," Gambit was smugness itself, completely unperturbed by Shade's innuendos. "Now what 'xactly did my Shadey drink last night t' make her lie t' Gambit an' why would she do that at all?"

Shade gave him a smug grin. "Well, I just know what I seem to remember I drank, but since what I seem to remember I did is different from what you told me I did, I might also be off about the drinks."

"C'est vrai," Gambit agreed, "but why lie to me, then?"

Shade looked at him. She had crawled back on the bed after she had placed the glass down and was now half on her knees, supporting her body weight with one hand, not touching him but nearly so, studying him half curious half thoughtfully. Yes, why indeed, she thought. Why would I lie to you? Why would you lie to me? As she thought that she understood that she was aiming for something with her dodging about. Aiming at the fact that ... she didn´t buy what he told her about the last night. She carefully touched her lower lip with her tongue. She was sure she knew where that came from, especially now athat her hed, even though still hurting, was feeling a bit clearer, making it easier to think. And thus easier to separate dream from reality.
"There are different reasons why people lie." she said finally. "To hide things. To avoid an argument. To avoid hurt. Because it´s more comfortable than the truth..." She paused, tilting her head to the side a little. "I did so a moment ago to joke." She paused again and when she spoke on, she was serious, but not reproachful. "And I lied to you yesterday. Also because it seemed fun. And that wasn´t fair. I´m sorry."

Gambit still wouldn't budge. It mattered to him more than she could possibly imagine, his feelings for her notwithstanding.
"Ya keep on thinkin' da t what ya think happened yesterday, actually happened?" he asked, keeping a look that said he was much more aware and understanding of the situation that she was.

Shade returned his glance, not breaking eye contact, wondering why he was doing this. She thought that it fitted into her image she had of him. The secretive man who would not share things that were mere trivia for others. She understood why that was so. And she understood that he would be bothered by something such as girl talk between herself and his wife. Of course he would. But why was he trying to make her believe none of it had happened? To tease her? Or was it a form of denial, as in trying to make her forget it had ever happened? Or was it to make her feel bad about it, because he was actually mad at her? She was not sure about the latter, because she knew him as someone who usually very clearly spoke his mind.
"Yes." she said after a moment. "Will you let me apologize for it?" She didn´t say this in a reproachful tone, nor in a joking one, but with sincerity, that it meant somethinf for her.

"Ya already have," Gambit shrugged. He really wished they could change the subject, but he let her have it for now.

Shade had been with him for a long enough time to be able to read between the lines. Now that said: ´We both know it happened, but I´ll not admit it.´ It also said, even more strongly so: ´Drop it.´ She wasn´t sure if she liked that. Because even though they were both in the know about it, both knowing this had not been a dream, his behaviour right now felt a bit like he was robbing her of a proper chance to discuss this. Not because she felt like continuing her poking fun of him. She would never do that when sober. But because she felt like she deserved a discussion. And again not because it was of relevance to their relationship or anything, but because she felt like she had deserved being rebuked for it. She had to admit that what Bel had said about her and Gambit´s time together had irked her a bit. Not about the past, but about his recent visits to New Orleans. But this was something she knew he would never want to discuss. Neither did she, really. She didn´t need to discuss a wife to feel content about what she felt he felt for her.
She give a small sigh. "Okay." she said, leaning closer to give him a small kiss on the nose.

Gambit could sense her determination, as well as her disappointment at not letting his cover slip, but there was nothing he wished to do about it, even though he certainly could. Shade's encounter with Bella Donna had ended incredibly well, Shade had been extremely lucky - he had been, too, actually - but discussing such a grave matter in this moment was not something he wanted to do.
And there was also that thing with those braces...
"Okay," he nodded, rather pleased that she conceded to playing by his rules, after all.

You´re an impossible man, Gambit, Shade thought as she studied him. Always so secretive. Always so concerned about his image, but not at all that much about his reputation. Bel had told her a few things the other night that she knew would embarrass Gambit terribly and as far as she remembered, Bel had made a bigger effort at trying to ridicule Gambit than she herself had. She briefly wondered whether he would make an excuse later and go to see her in her hotel and how that conversation would go. And while thinking that, she allowed herself to go over what she was certain was memories. Blurred, somewhat, by the alcohol, but still. And what she remembered about Bel´s behaviour and about Gambit´s didn´t leave a bitter aftertaste at all. Quite the contrary.
Following an inner impulse, she got to her knees again, crawled towards him and reached for his chin, kissing the corner of his mouth.

Shade pressed one eye shut, giving him a fake thoughtful look. "Is that a nice way of saying: ´You stink like booze, woman!´?"

"If by answerin' my question wit' a question of your own ya tryin' to extort the NOT nice version of it, I say you're on de right track, chere," Gambit gave a sly smile. "Don't press your luck, woman, should I carry ya t' de shower?"
