As the bartender turned to make her drink, she turned back to Odin, her face returning, reflexively, to her normal coldness. "I like it. It's slick, to the point." She said, describing the title of the magazine. The bartender returned with her drink and she sipped it, knowing what to expect as far as the quality of the liquor from her previous visit.

"It gets the point across easily enough," ::Odin agreed, which explained his own amusement at the title. A play on the gene itself which set them apart. Before the bartender left, he asked for a glass of water as a chaser.::

Monet nodded in agreement. "How many people work there?" In all honesty, she was running out of conversation, at least on this topic.

"About a half dozen of us," ::Odin replied honestly. When his water appeared, he thanked the bartender and took a sip.:: "We're new, so we're getting off the ground slowly but surely."

Taking another sip from her drink, Monet let her gaze skim over the other patrons of the club. Turning back to Odin, she asked, "So, the magazine is new? What did you do before that?"

::Odin took another sip of water before replying. She was oddly inquisitive, but he could appreciate that, as he had similar tendencies. His attention remained focused on her; he had no desire to watch people dance.:: "I was a researcher."

Monet quirked an eyebrow, as his answer had been oddly vague. She decided not to press the issue. She sipped her drink and tried to think of something else to talk about.

::Unlike with many personal questions, the vagueness had not been intentional. The breadth of Odin's research escapades made simple description difficult. He took another sip of water, and decided to fill the silence with questions of his own.:: "What are you studying at the prestigious Columbia?"

Monet was relieved at the change in subject. She hated awkward silences. "Philosophy." She answered simply.

::That was a far cry from Odin's undergraduate coursework, but he could hold a conversation for a few minutes.:: "Eastern or Western?"

"Actually, it's kind of a front. I mean, I've taken a few classes toward my major, but mostly general education courses." She paused long enough to take another sip of her drink. "I'm in college because that's where my father wants me to be. I'd be a liar if I said I had a passion for philosophy."

"What do you have a passion for?" ::Odin was a firm believer in doing what one loved. It had taken him all over the country in his short life, but he stood by the principle.::

This was a sore point for Monet. She laughed a little nervously. "Honestly, I don't know. Most of my time is spent fighting boredom. I'm afraid I'm a very shallow person." She looked down at her drink, feeling the truth of the statement sink in.

::Her laugh was off, and the admission was peculiar. For once in his life, Odin didn't have an immediate comment; he never did with self-deprecating comments. There was always something inappropriate about replying to them. He was thoughtful for a moment, reaching for his rum to sip, before speaking again. He focused on the boredom aspect, rather than her self-declaration of shallowness.:: "Again, not to pry, but more for the sake of trying to help, is this your first time striking out on your own?"

Monet pulled herself together and sat up straight. She met his gaze again. "No, I've been exploring on my own for a couple of weeks now." She left out the part about her friends' subtle attitude changes that had caused her to start exploring.
