Name: Karl Lykos, M.D. (license suspended)
Alias: Sauron
D.O.B.: March 12
Place of Birth: Lawrenceville, New Jersey
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 170 lbs
Hair Color: “Dirty” Blond
Eye Color: Red
General Appearance: As a result of his mutation, Karl’s skin is a reptilian green, which is also somewhat coarser than a normal human. He uses skin lotion on those parts of him likely to come into human contact, for what little it can do. Karl also possesses a small pair of featherless wings which sprout from his back; he binds them beneath his clothing before going out in public. His build is otherwise on the larger side of average.
Personality: Karl has a great deal to atone for, as he knows from personal experience that power corrupts. He has experienced the highest pinnacles and the deepest pits, and now he simply wants to find stability. His powers create a bit of a two-personality dichotomy, as he grows manic after taking energy and depressed if he is too long without it. Prior to the death of Tanya Andserssen-Lykos, he was quite confident; now what little confidence he displays is nothing more than an affectation. He is a learned man, but one who has lost his way; all the knowledge in the world is useless to a man without an inner compass.
Powers:
Life-force Absorption: Karl has the ability to absorb another person’s life force through touch, although he must activate the power consciously. The energy he absorbs tends to be negligible, although it is possible for him to kill if he takes too much; he utilizes the power from need, for the energy he absorbs grants him strength. He grows physically weaker if he goes more than a few days without taking energy from another being.
Hypnotic Gaze: Through concentration and direct eye contact, Karl has the ability to place another person in a hypnotic trance, during which the person is susceptible to his commands. The longer the eye contact, the longer the duration of the trance once contact is broken; generally, each second of contact after the trance is established results in a minute’s duration once contact is broken. The more frequently he engages with an individual, the longer the trances last. Eye contact without Karl’s concentration has no effect.
Flight: Karl has the ability to fly moderate distances with the small wings on his back. He can carry another person with him, although during those times people tend to hang on for dear life, lest he drop them.
Background/History: If you have ever wondered what a doctor who has lost his license looks like, you will find the answer in Doctor Karl Lykos.
Karl Lykos was born to a mother who died when he was an infant, and a father who was a modern-day adventurer. He spent his childhood seeing the world with his father, and accompanying wealthy clients in their attempts to pretend that there were unconquered corners of the Earth. One such client was Doctor Anderssen, who would often take his daughter Tanya along with him on their adventures. The two families became friends.
When Karl was a teenager, his father died in an exploration in Tierra De Fuego. The experience traumatized Karl and caused a delay in the development of his mutation, resulting in him becoming a “late-bloomer.” With no mother and no other family, Doctor Anderssen allowed Karl to stay with him and Tanya, and raised him as a foster son.
Karl fell in love with Tanya, and he wished to be worthy of her hand in marriage. He concentrated on his studies and applied to Columbia University where he hoped to study psychology and become a doctor. Like most men of his age with those same aspirations, he became a student of Charles Xavier shortly before the latter retired to create his own secondary school. He also became friendly with Leonard Samson, another student of Xavier’s, and one who is now held in much higher esteem than Karl.
It was during his studies that Karl first developed his mutation, which was quite a shock to him. It happened in pieces – his eyes first changed color and he thought it Conjunctivitis. Next came the energy absorption, and as he had yet to realize it, it fit with his thought that he was ill, perhaps with influenza. He accidentally discovered the power with Tanya – he was simply so tired and instinctively he knew that touching he would help. He instantly felt better and began to put two and two together. While his powers developed, taking energy from others helped to suppress the physical side of his mutation, although eventually all broke through: his skin changed color and texture, his eyes remained permanently red, and he sprouted wings, which he learned to bind. His other powers developed as well: flight via the wings and his hypnotic gaze. He chose the name “Sauron” due to the Tolkein character’s description, which seemed fitting enough.
Tanya was more accepting than Doctor Anderssen, who was viscerally disturbed by the nature of Karl’s mutation, although he didn’t outright disown him.
Upon earning his medical degree, Karl established an office in Trenton, New Jersey and began a modest psychiatric practice. It was lucrative enough, and soon he was able to put a down payment on a house, and he invited Tanya to move in with him. They dated but were not formally engaged until he was able to prove that he, despite his appearance and his mutant status, could provide for a family.
More than love Tanya, Karl needed her. He had learned that without absorbing energy, he grew weaker, and Tanya understood and provided for him. They both found themselves addicted to the nature of their relationship: the need, the power, the strength he gained from her and the weakness she exhibited in his power. By the time they were formally engaged, they were both so entrenched in the cycle that neither could conceive of leaving; they had no choice in the engagement because their mutual dependency had consumed them.
Karl’s practice and reputation grew, which fed his sense of self-importance. He and Tanya were wed the next year, in a large, formal affair that was the envy of everyone they knew.
Their relationship continued, unhinged until one night when he took too much from Tanya, forcing her into a coma in which she would remain for several months.
During this time, Karl still needed his bursts of energy, and so he began to take from otherwise non-consenting parties: strangers on public transportation, passersby on the street, and patients. He was careful at first, but after receiving news of Tanya’s death, he became a broken man. He felt empty, and began taking more from those around him in a vain attempt to regain what he had lost. Of course, nobody was a substitute, and in his frenzy, he grew careless. One patient broke free of his control, realized what he was doing, and filed an ethics complaint. After the hearing, his license was suspended indefinitely pending counseling and a substance abuse program – as he appeared as an addict to those around him.
He completed the substance abuse program, as he was not addicted to any substance which could be quantified, but his counseling has been ongoing and essentially ineffective. On more than one occasion he has taken control of his appointed-psychiatrist, which has created setbacks.
At the moment he is unemployed and otherwise without direction. He is also no longer in contact with his foster father.
