She turned her attention to the menu as well, deciding fairly quickly; pasta was always an attraction for her. At about that point the waitress made a discreet appearance and asked if they'd like to order drinks. Typhoid ordered tea, still trying to stay away from alcohol.

::Pietro, too, abstained from alcohol from respect for her, although he would have liked to have a lager at the table in the absence of anything stronger. Instead he ordered juice.::

She smiled a little, shaking her head slightly; Pietro often liked alcohol with dinner, and since it didn't affect him, his drinking it was hardly a problem. He'd held back from ordering liquor in front of her before, and her answer would always be the same about it. "If you want something to drink, love, go ahead," she said gently.

::Pietro accepted her knowledge of her own limits, and thus he told the waitress,:: "I will also take a lager."

"It helped," ::Pietro said to her. He believed drinking could solve problems, simply not *all* problems, and that was when it needed to be curtailed.::

"For awhile." She remembered not wanting it when it was offered once, on the way back from her so-called aunt's.

"It did what it had to," ::Pietro said, as it had provided momentary relief, and he had been there with her.::

She nodded slightly, then changed the subject. What happened in Italy hadn't been the best of times. "How's the Academy?"

::That was the question everyone asked Pietro; it was the most stable element in life, the path to a career, and he assumed it was safe to ask about. His answer rarely changed.:: "Well enough. The law is the most consuming part."

She nodded; she'd made no study of the law herself, but imagined that it could get confusing and lengthy, at the very least. "Speaking of jobs, I have some other news for you."

"What is it?" ::Pietro asked. From others, that phrasing might imply impatience, but it was simply his manner of speaking.::

"I have a small part in an off Broadway play," she said, smiling a little proudly. "It's nothing big, but...it's a paying part in a real production."

::A genuine smile touched Pietro's lips at that news.:: "Congratulations."

She smiled in return, glad to see him pleased and happy. "Can you come on opening night? I'm only on the stage for five minutes, but..."
