Harry turned as the phone rang. No one knew they were there, and he'd left a note at the front desk not to be disturbed by anyone even employees. Why the phone was ringing now was a mystery. "No I didn't tell anyone, are you serious?" He asked as he walked over to the phone, moving past Steve and picking up the receiver. "Hello?" He wasn't in the mood for some prank or to be interrupted by some manager asking if his stay was a pleasant one so far. Harry just wasn't having it today.

::Manuel began struggling at his bonds, not to escape but because he wanted to rub the spray out of his eyes. It *burned.* The telephone rang, but he barely registered it over the pain. He began blinking rapidly, when it became obvious his hands would not come free.::

When somebody answered the phone, Shade could feel her heart skip a beat. She closed her eyes for a short moment, trying to fight down a strange mix of feelings, partly fear, partly anger, before she started to talk, her voice more composed than she had hoped it would be. What the hell are you doing there, Shadey, an inner voice wondered, prompting her to explain why she didn´t just turn and leave it to the police. She couldn´t reasonably explain it and therefore, didn´t. At least not, for now.
"Mr. Smith?" she started, making a small break, but not waiting for a reply. "This is the hotel management." She looked around. The place looked deserted but her heart was beating like mad and her voice sounded terribly loud in her own ears. "There are two gentlemen from the police here." She was dimly surprised about how easy it was to lie. "I don´t know who they´re looking for, I just wanted to let you know. After all, the guest is king here." It was a bluff, of course it was. Since there had been a woman at the recption earlier chance were good her voice would not sound suspicious. Other than that, the hotel looked shabby enough to make possible that the staff was just as intent on keeping the cops away as some of their clints were.
She knew she was risking her only chance. If they caught on, she only hoped the two of them would be distracted for long enough to have her free their prisoner. In case they didn´t leave him here that was. Shade inwardly prayed they would not take the time to untie their victim first but either just check on things and see if everything was safe before they returned or leave.

Steven looked up to Harry as he took the call. Obviously, he was listening to a voice of a woman, but he could not understand a word what she was saying. With a short glance over hs shoulder to the mutant, he quickly checked what the young man was going to do there. Then he looked back to Harry and gave him a signal to let him know what was going on.

The police. That's all they needed. Harry hung up the phone without saying anything and turned to the prisoner before looking to Steve. "The police are here," Harry couldn't believe that their luck. Just when they were about to get some answers the police show up. He crossed his arms over his chest again, thinking of what they should do. They couldn't let him go, and they couldn't risk getting caught by the police. Sure they might be able to put up a fight but that's the last thing they wanted, being on the police radar.

::Manuel's eyes widened at the mention of the police, and if he could smile under the circumstances, he would. Instead, he settled for a quietly renewed struggle with the bonds and unbridled hope of being rescued. He had never before been happier to hear that the police were nearby than he was in this moment. He would be free soon.::

There was no reply and Shade did not know whether that was a good sign or a bad one. With slightly shivering fingers she pushed the cell phone back into the pocket of her blue jeans and much to her relief found the place to be still empty. No one seemed to have noticed or hear her. She had not let her powers slip even for a moment. As long as she used it on herself alone with nothing else to it, it hardly demanded any focus or special concentration and it was safer anyways in a shady place like this, she thought. Had the situation been any different, she might havs snickered at the verbal pun. Now however, she didn´t and felt even more tense than before.
There were two ways now, she thought, trying to keep focussed. Her call had been a bluff since this hotel looked like customers who might be in trouble with the cops were not too seldom a thing. Therefore, she had thought it possible those two had bribed the personell to warn them. All of it was a bluff of course, working on her assumptions and she didn´t have any experience with situations like this. So either, she thought, they would be scared enough to just bolt and leave without the mutant or they would somehow make it a drama. She inwardly prayed they would just run for it. The place possibly had some emergency or fire staircase exits and ladders - little things she knew because she had left buildings via that route the one or other time with Gambit.
The only reasonable thing to do now was to return to the room and she did so, hurrying up the steps, taking care not to cause any noise that went above a soft tap of her sneakers on the worn carpet of the run down corridor. Making it back towards where she had been waiting earlier, she thought that now she had to wait. If they left, she would have to make use of the tiny moment where they slipped out so she could get inside without them noticing and hopefully without them bothering about their captive any more.

Steve stared to Harry for a few seconds. It took that so long till he really realised what he had said. Without saying something, he turned around and walked over to the window behind the young man. Carefully, he took a look down on the street without that anyone could see him from the outside. Nothing had changed down there, just the normal traffic and the hectic passing walkers. "I cannot see anything" Steve said to Harry, still looking outside. After a while, he turned back to him. "Lets check out, what's going on there" he said then and checked the straps of the young man, before he walked over to Harry. Stopping right beside him to said with a quiete voice that the mutant could not hear it "I am not sure, if we can trust such a call. We should check it out by ourselves".

Harry closed his eyes for a second before looking at the mutant. "You made sure he's secure, so we'll go check it out real fast," He said keeping his voice low and looked to Steve. "If everything looks okay we'll come back, I don't want to leave him for too long" Harry walked toward the door looking around making sure that if they couldn't come back that nothing lead to them. "If it's not, we'll figure something out, alright?" He hated when things didn't go according to plan. It made things more complicated then they needed to be.

::They were actually leaving. This was - not quite too good to be true, as Manuel had been kidnapped and beaten severely up to this point - but good enough to fill him with hope. As soon as they left, he could get out of this somehow. The police would find him...::

By now, Shade had made it back to the room and was now standing in front of it, as close to the door as she dared, but pressed against the wall. She had been running and her breath was going fast, so she tried best to calm both her breath and her heartbeat.
Above the slight rush of blood she could hear in her ears, the voices of the men were audible as muffled words behind the door. She couldn´t make out any details, probably also because right now she was trying more to concentrate and calm her breath than actually listen. There was just one chance and she would have to be quick. If they left they would leave any second and if they did, she would have to make her way in as quickly as she could without them noticing.
God, Shadey, what are you getting yourself into there? her inner voice of reason asked, but she ignored it. This had stopped being about her quite some time ago. It wasn´t even about this guy and some stupid heroic attempt to save him ... well, okay, partly it was. But what kept popping up in her head, what had made her come so far and what had made her not inform the police because they would destroy all evidence ... was proof. She didn´t know what she would do with proof if these men really turned out who she supsected them to be, she only knew she needed to know. After more than two years, after she had learnt to deal and to live with what had happened, she found her reason switched off at the opportunity of finally finding out who they had been - even though these names would probably mean nothing to her. But names didn´t matter. What mattered was knowledge, nothing more.

"Do not worry, he want be able to escape" Steven answered and turned to the table to put all the stuff back into the bag. It was a good idea, which Harry had. If the police would be there, they would not find any evidence or not enough to find them. At last, he grabbed the sprayer. But instead of placing it into the bag, he quickly turned around to the mutant to spray him into the eyes again. It would be long enough that the mutant had more to fight against the spray in his eyes as trying to get unstrapped. "Okay, lets check everything out quickly" Steven said and put the sprayer into the bag. Grabbing the bag and shouldered it. His mind was focused on everything on the table, that he did not even thought about the documents in the drawer of the table. "We do not have a lot time" he explained as Steven walked over to the door and opened it. Carefully, he looked to both sides of the corridor to see that nobody was there. He waved over to Harry to sign him that everything was clear and he should follow him out.

Harry looked around real fast and not seeing anything in sight went to the door and opened it. "Let's go" He looked out first making sure no one was coming. No one was, so he started down the hallway. They needed to do this fast. The longer they left the mutant alone the more likely hood something would go wrong. It always did when mutants were involved.

::Manuel had held his breath in anticipation, but exhaled when both of the men were out of the apartment. They were actually leaving. He did not yet call for help, since they would overheard and return. Instead, he worked his wrists against the bonds, tried to loosen them; as soon as he had his hands free...::

It was as if either luck was on her side or things were going a bit too smoothly to be true. Her back pressed against the wall, barely daring to breathe, Shade watched the two men leave the apartment, seeing both their faces for the first time as they hastily checked the corridor. The faces rang no bell but that was no surprise. Still, she stared at them and didn´t dare to even move until they had turned a corner towards the stairs. Only then, she stepped away a bit, exhaling a breath.
She didn´t believe her eyes. She had heard the door click, but this time the fact that this hotel was actually so run down, had something good. Seemingly, the lock wasn´t working its best any longer and hadn´t snapped completely so now it was ajar. Shade felt a cold shiver down her spine when she realised how lucky that was. It had been far more likely for them to close the door tight and then she would bever have made it inside in time. She didn´t know if they were indeed leaving or just leaving for a short moment. She had to consider the latter.
When she was sure they were gone, she sneaked inside, the door creaking slightly when she did so. When she was inside, she let her powers slip and appeared near the door.
