Had Shade been a truly sarcastic person, she would have replied to that with ´She wanted candy´, but that of course would not have made sense, nor been an answer. The question was probably rather why she had shown up here at all. Probably the mother, whoever she was, was behind it. Somehow, even though she wasn´t sure, Shade doubted that the kids mother was Gambit´s wife, she couldn´t tell why, maybe it had to do with the faint mental image she had with this woman by now, built on the few bits and pieces he had told her. She didn´t appear to be the sort of person to act like this, passively, she would probably have knocked herself. As if you would be able to tell Shade, her inner voice growled with some sarcasm.
She let a hand brush through her hair. "There was noone else... I think." she said looking ahead of heras if trying to make sense of the girl´s sudden appearance. She had had a look up and down the corridor. Sheesh, part of her hoped the mother was around. Who would let a single, little kid walk around in the dark trick or treating in such a big city for God´s sake?

Gambit was glad to hear that Shade had been at least this prudent to check the hallway. Probably the long time she'd known Gambit was of some use for her, after all.
"This is really stupid," he grumbled, then opened the door again, "I'll ask for myself."
He returned to the corridor and stopped in front of Connie, leaning down to look at her. "Connie, where's your mother?"

Shade let herself lean against the wall, closing her eyes for a moment. Wow, she thought, this was really weird. She decided to try and calm down the huge bundle of confused questions for now since they were just too many to handle for now and stayed where she was for a moment, hearing Gambit talk to Connie.

"Mama is at home," Connie replied, swaying her basket back and forth. "She said I could go trick-or-treating."
"Of course ya could," Gambit agreed. "So where is your home, where do ya live?" Apparently, it wasn't too far away from here, since he was certain Kate was sane enough not to let the girl wander far from home... in the city, moreover.

From where she was standing, Shade couldn´t see much of was going on, but curiosity got the better of her. She had had a look at the girl before but, still... Slowly she walked towards the open door, which was pretty much in eye sight of the corridor anyways and leant against the door frame. She wasn´t intruding their conversation like this but she wasn´t eavesdropping either - even from inside the room their voices had been clearly audible.
She just stood there, her back against the door frame, waiting for the scene on front of her to lose anything about it´s strangeness. It didn´t happen. The likeness of their eyes was just too strong an image to escape.

"There," Connie said, pointing with her finger at the door. Well, technically, she was correct.
Gambit frowned. He straightened up and got his cellphone out of the pocket, dialling Kate's number. Connie, in the meantime, feeling she could totally make herself at home, headed into the kitchen, drawn by the smells coming from it.
"Kate," Gambit greeted Connie's mother when she picked up the phone. "It's Remy. Can ya give me any idea 'bout why Constance is in my apartment right now?"

Seeing the girl head off into the kitchen, Shade followed her. She had never had kids of her own and didn´t feel too comfortable around the really young ones, but she had had a little brother once and knew how quickly a finger could be burnt ... or an open wine bottle tested for its ingredients.

Connie placed her basket onto the kitchen table and looked around. Really, no cookie bowls, no candy jars. Weird place. She walked to the stove to see what was cooking.
"How 'm I supposed t' know, she jus' came here all by herself!" Gambit exclaimed. He listened to the response and sighed. "Awright, what's your address..? ... What?!" he glanced at the door, then back at where Connie had been standing, then, not finding her, spun around to see where she'd gone to.

Shade walked a little closer to the kid, making sure the stove was switched off and that she couldn´t reach anything hot with her hands. "Carefuly there." she said before she paused. Great. How to make conversation with a 6 or so year old? "So uhm..." she said, tossing a glance at the kitchen door. "I hope you had more luck with other houses, huh?"

Connie looked at Shade before standing on her tiptoes to maybe peek through the glass lid of the pan. "Not really," she said. "They don't have candies, you see. Well, some of them do, but not everybody. And you don't have any candies, too."
Gambit appeared in the doorway, his cellphone already switched off. His face bore a weird expression as he watched Constance.

"Well, I´m sorry." Shade said with a weird smile, not really sure what to respond to it. She was sure there were quite a lot of people who had some candy in the house, just as she was certain that Connie´s rather meager yield was not a result of people´s lack of sugar stuff around the house. She frowned at that thought. She heard Gambit approach and turned to see him stand in the doorframe with an expression hard to interpret. He had been phoning with the girl´s mother, that much she had gathered. ((okies And I has to run into the city to buy Indy 1-3 for 15 bucks *whooot*))

Connie all but reached to grab the lid of the pan before Gambit intercepted her and gently spun her around, nudging her in the direction of the nearest chair.
"Your mother said she'll be 'ere in a minute," he informed the kid. "So jus' sit tight, awright?" glancing at the stove, he reached to switch the heat off completely.

In a minute? Shade wondered. That meant the mother had probably really just been around the corner, waiting in front of the building or whatever. She had only caught tiny bits of the phone call and therefore couldn´t make any further conclusions.
She turned completely and, not really knowing where to stand or sit, she just remained where she was, leaning her back against the counter instead of hopping on it as she would mostly do. The situation was pretty awkward all in all.

"I'm bored," Connie announced after she was made to sit down on the chair, and she sat there swinging her legs up and down as if walking on air. "Can I go? Why is mama coming here, what did I do?"
"Nothin'," Gambit said, "she'll just come by to say hi t' me, an' then ya can go trick'r'treatin' all you want." He suppressed a sigh and stuck his hands into the pockets, looking out the window. This evening had promised to be so good, and now look how it turned out...

Knowing that Gambit was usually very much a people person who would never find it difficult to talk to people, Shade could clearly tell this situation was not easy for him at all. It was a strange scene, father and daughter with the first obviously feeling awkward and not knowing what to do and herself probably adding to the awkwardness and the latter not knowing what was going on - that, and Shade was having the suspition the girl didn´t really know who Gambit was. That was, it looked like she had maybe seen him before, juding by her earlier reaction (unless she wasn´t one of those kids to always at once trust everbody), but it made the impression she didn´t know who Gambit was.
With Gambit standing by the window, her not really knowing what to say, especially as long as Connie was still here and the kid being obviously bored beyond belief, there were two options, Shade reckoned. One: keep standing here, giving the kid the idea she had done something wrong, both of them standing a good step away from her while she was to sit at that table, all three of them waiting for the time to tick away. Option two was to somehow make things easier. The expression "to break the ice" was inappropriate for the situation so she pushed it away. Hesitating for another moment and deciding that she couldn´t stand this awkwardness, Shade slowly pushed herself away from the counter and sat down on another chair, opposit the kid. It didn´t make the situation less strange, but maybe it would make it a little less awkward - at least for the girl. "What about I teach you so magic as long as we wait for your mum?" she asked. Her voice sounded relatively neutral, not too tense for an observer, even though someone who knew her as well as Gambit did would be able to tell the difference.
