"Connie, right" Shade said somewhat stupidly. "all right, darling, I´m sure there´s some really great candy here. I´ll be back in a moment, okay?" She didn´t exactly wait for a reply but turn around, scowling after she did so, not for the kid to see. Walking back into the kitchen she paused in the door frame, opening her mouth and closing it once before she had a look over her shoulder towards the door. "Do we...erm... have any candy?" she asked, her voice showing bewilderment and somewhat mirroring her confused thoughts. This was strange. Sure, that didn´t mean anythig but a kid like that showing up here all on her own. If that was coincidence which she just told herself for now it was a frigging weird coincidence.

Connie was left standing at the door, and she immediately got bored, twisting her lips in all kinds of ways in a playful manner and swaying the basket in her hand back and forth as she studied the hallway, the door, and what was inside the apartment.

"Candies??" Gambit raised a brow. "What, some kids trick-or-treatin'?" he remembered what day it was, and he had almost started to forget. "I kinda doubt that. Mebbe some chocolate in th' fridge?"

Shade had actually no idea whether there was any chocolate in the fridge. Chocolate sauce there was, usually, the ice cream kind, but apart from that? "One kid, yeah." she said, still scowling when she walked towards the fridge. "Says her name´s Connie."

A funny coincidence, Gambit thought, but said nothing on that. There were thousands of Connies in this country. "Connie, huh?" he echoed. "Well, I ain't prepared for Halloween, obviously... maybe there's some waffles in the cupboard?"

Gambit didn´t show much of a reaction which could mean everything or nothing. Either he hid a realisation that came with her mention of the name or the name didn´t mean anything at all. That or he didn´t know any names...which was kind of unlogical... or was it? "...kay" she just murmured. There was no chocolate in the fridge, just as there were no waffles in the cupboard. Great... "Well, doesn´t look good for her..." she said telling herself that there was no definite reason for her thoughts to be in an uproar and for her voice sounding a tad off.

The girl, in the meantime, had already wandered a few steps into the apartment, eyeing everything with interest.

"Ya okay, Shade?" Gambit turned to look at her, sensing there was something off. For some reason, she seemed to be too worried about candies for some trick-or-treating kid.

Of course he sensed she was behaving somewhat strange. He knew her long enough to be able to do so even without any empathic senses. Shade wiped away a strand of her hair, closing the cupboard again (and cursing inwardly for not paying too much attention and nearly making a jar topple out). She didn´t even know an answer to her question. "Yeah, I..." There wasn´t actually much sense in telling nonsense, wasn´t there. "...something about that kid just got me off track, that´s all." The last two words weakened the confusion in her statement which was probably why it sounded stranges in her own ears.

Gambit gave her an attentive look. "Your maternal instincts flarin' up?" he asked with slight sarcasm. "Speakin' of the kid, did ya leave her standin' behind the door while you're here?"

Shade wasn´t usually the kind of person to be tongue tied with one of his typical one liners and had the situation been any different he would have gotten a retort to his first remark. Now however, what Gambit said next reminded her that, yes, she had. Stupid, stupid! she inwardly cursed herself, feeling a very uneasy tingle up her spine. The thought that the kid could possibly be a shapeshifter, trying to catch her off guard just by sporting the set of eyes she had was making her turn on the spot and hurry out of the kitchen.

Connie had already wandered further into the apartment by this time and was peeking into the entrance to the first room. She was subtle about being inquisitive, though - she wasn't touching anything, even the walls.
Noticing Shade coming out of the kitchen again, she automatically raised her basket. "Trick or treat?"

Shade slowed down abruptly, partly because she was startled by the girls more or less sudden appearance, partly because she was trying to calm down. Trying to think reasonably, she told herself that this probably was really just a little girl. Had it been different, she wouldn´t have been so careful, she would probably have disappeared into one of the rooms already. So that looked like there was one thing less to be worried or bewildered about. The other, however, remained.
"Now, you startled me." she said with a somewhat forced sounding chuckle before she walked over to the kid. Cowering down so she was on eye level with the little girl she found herself almost staring for yet another moment, unconsciously scanning the little face for even more evidence. "Well, I´m sorry." she said, making a face. "but looks like we don´t have any candy here for you."

"Oh," the girl said, visibly disappointed. What kind of the house was it that didn't keep candies on Halloween? There was, of course, the 'trick' part besides the 'treat', but the girl didn't think so logically as to point it out. So she headed for the exit.

Shade straightened up again, walking after her. Despite the strangeness of this situation she was starting to feel just a little bad for the girl. She probably would find a lot of other houses that had tons of candy... or wouldn´t she? She was, as was obvious, a mutant. While watching her walk towards the door Shade crossed her arms, silently wondering how many people had just shut the door in her face tonight.
"I could show you a trick." she said before she could think about what she was saying. "since I don´t have a treat and all. huh?"
