Gambit straightened his back a little until he was able to see Shade in the mirror; and then he started laughing at the irony, and he was laughing all the way to the kitchen. Once he was there, he opened the window and, never the one to take care of his health much, lit a cigarette. It was a kind of masochistic curiosity to see what it would do to him after what had happened, but then he really needed a cigarette.

It was probably the last thing Shade had expected him to do. She had expected a ironic remark or maybe even nothing or a shrug or something unrelated, but not that. Raising an eyebrow at him as he past her, she followed him into the kitchen. "I´m wondering," she said, her eyes straying past the empty ice cream box and the chocolate sauce smeared bowl on the table, "was that just such a hilarious comment or are you just having some very grim sense of humour?" She picked up the empty ice cream box and let it drop again. Empty. Damnit. She felt like some sugar and would probably have drunk molten ice cream if there had still been some. Instead, she walked over to the counter where there was still the Coke. Reaching for it, she hesitated for a moment, then took the wine bottle instead.

Gambit was standing facing the window so he couldn't see Shade's movements, but he heart the sounds, and the bottle clinking. He inhaled a lungful of smoke and slowly let it out again. "I jus'- ya know, funny. Like we have celebrated Halloween! Yay. In the best 'f traditions."

"Yeah." Shade said, regarding the bottle for a moment. It had been left standing open since the evening before and that probably meant it didn´t taste that great any more - or at least she thought so with what little she knew about that kind of stuff. "and we even survived it. Should teach you a thing or two about better to have candy in the house next year." She gave the bottle another, almost thoughtful look before she took a swig from it. She never typically did this but somehow felt like it right now. Probably compensation.

Shade drinking wine straight out of the bottle - one didn't see that every day. Gambit turned around, keeping near the open window, and pulled at the cigarette again, looking at Shade with a smirk hiding in the corners of his lips.
"Hell no," he said, "should teach ya a thing or two 'bout sayin' adamant no to a kid."

Shade chuckled at that, keeping the bottle in her hand. "Nah." she said. "I trick and treated myself as a kid. I hated people shutting their doors in my face. Couldn´t do that after she gave me that look." The last two words sounded like a cliché couldn´t-resist-those-huge-kiddie-eyes thing, but of course it was ambiguous here.

Gambit shrugged. "Well, I nearly paid with my life for your delight over a little kid. We're spendin' next Halloween separately." He flicked the ash off the cigarette out of the window and pulled at the cigarette again.

Shade snorted at that before she took another sip from the bottle. "I´ll just decide not to feel guilty about that." she said. "cause I just let the kid in. And the kid was well behaved. Apart from killing all the ice cream. And half of the chocolate sauce." Which she had half forced on her in an awkward attempt of trying to make for an unawkward atmosphere.

"Right," Gambit said. "Ya never know how your actions turn out after a series of consequences."

"Yeah." Shade said, looking down at the wine bottle she was still spinning in her hands. Her humouroustone was kind of a mask. She was still having not too easy a time to make sense and work through what had happened the night before and it tuned out no to be easy. "That was just...bad." she said after a moment, her voice different now. "I would have tried to kill her if she had attacked again ..." The whole scene had had something disturbing to it and had confronted her with a side of herself that she had not had to deal with so far. Fighting for your life. Being ready to kill. With Gambit almost unconscious on the floor, she knew she would no have hesitated to swing that pointer at her and the thought was as logical as it was new...and kind of scary.

"Well, that wouldn't have been this big a deal, anyway," Gambit remarked. "'xcept, well, a kid needs a mother, that much can be said in her defence."

Not that big a deal... Part of Shade was shunning away from that thought. The thought of being ready to kill someone. It was something that was unusual to her mindset. On the other hand she knew this had just been what she would have done. Heck, she would have given evrything if necessary to keep that crazy woman from trying to finish what she had begun.
She nodded silently, her gaze still fixed on the bottle before she slid down along the kitchen counter, sitting on th ground. She could have walked over to a chair, but didn´t. "She´s a good kid." she just said. It didn´t feel right that the girl had had to witness much of this.

"All kids are," Gambit said. "Even I was, before I got corrupted," he rolled his eyes slightly and kept smoking.

Shade rolled her head to the side slightly, glancing up at him. "Probably," she said, referring to what he had said first, about kids in general. "Guess my overtaxed mind was just trying to make a point of how odd it is how it managed to get along with a really awkward situation." Connie seemed to be one of the kids who warmed up to strangers pretty quickly and that had made the situation easier to deal with, not counting in what had happened later. And even though the ensuing fight was overlayering the evening´s event, it was not the only thing that had had an effect on her.

"Well, ya get along wit' most situations, I've noticed," Gambit said. "Ya don't wanna get some rest, no?"
