(( This is a Halloween thread ))
This Halloween, Gambit decided not to go to New Orleans for the annual mourn-the-dead family reunion, instead choosing to spend it with Shade in his apartment, in front of the cozy fireplace and with some special treats for the evening. He was busy in the kitchen, preparing a spicy dinner.

There hadn´t been much of a Halloween the previous year and even though Shade wasn´t usually the type of person who would have a problem with that, she still appreciated Gambit deciding to stay in New York this time. They weren´t feeling up to any big Halloween party and had nothing planned apart from some nice and cozy hanging out.
Shade had been getting some candles for the room with the fluffy carpet and had now approached the kitchen. She was leaning in the door frame invisibly with her arms crossed, just watching him prepare the food for a moment before she walked in and stepped up to him, popping up out of thin air just when she was about to hop onto a free space on the kitchen counter. Stuff like that usually didn´t startle him, not with his thieving senses and all, but that wouldn´t keep her from doing it now and then. "That looks yummy." she commented, peeking over to what he was preparing. "Need any help?"

Shade's unexpected appearance, though foreseen by his sixth sense, did startle Gambit a bit, but he didn't show it, having, as always, good control over his reactions. "Not really," he said. "But if ya want, you can prepare somethin' to drink... whatever ya choose."

"Okay." Shade said, pushing herself off the counter again to walk over to the fridge. It offered quite a choice, as usual, but Gambit didn´t keep all of the drinks in there. She took out several different kinds of juice to try and mix something, a bottle of Coke and placed both on the counter before getting an opener for one of the wine bottles from the cabinet. Gambit usually of course knew far better how to prepare drinks naturally and her skills in mixing drinks were very rudimentary, so she went for something that didn´t require much mixing. She opened the wine bottle and left it to stand before getting some glasses.

This was promising to be a very nice evening - just the kind Gambit needed every once in a while to indulge in some coziness and lazy around. He glanced at the drinks Shade was arranging on the counter, thinking what kind of a choice she had in mind. Probably nothing too outrageous, as was always the case with the prudent her. He chuckled at that.

Shade glanced at him from the corners of her eyes, narrowing her eyes at him in mock suspition at his chuckle. "What?" she asked, thinking that he was most likely referring to the relatively small part of alcohol with the drinks up till now. Or the obligatory Coke. "Too little booze?"

"Ha," Gambit smirked, "woman knows everythin'." He stirred the meat on the frying pan, and then heard the doorbell ring.
That was weird. He wasn't supposed to be getting visitors in this place. Maybe it was the building administration or something? "Will you get that?" he asked Shade.

"That´s cause woman´s so damn smart." Shade replied with shrug that could also have accompanied some totally self-explaining statement.
At the sound of the doorbell, she turned her head. "Sure." she said, scowling inwardly. It wasn´t usual that someone would ring at Gambit´s door. She didn´t even know how many people knew of his whereabouts - probably that was just a hand full. Leaving the kitchen, she walked towards the front door to open it.

Behind the door, there stood a little girl, probably aged around six or seven, dressed like the Little Red Riding-Hood, with a basket in her hand, staring up at the door with expectant red-on-black eyes.

A look through the door spy had told Shade that the unexpected visitor was a kid - nothing particularly unusual for Halloween especially since the child, as far as she had been able to judge before opening the door, was dressed up in a red cape or something similar. She opened the door, automatically giving a smile at the little one but pausing kind of in mid-breath when taking in the little visitor´s outer appearance. She had always found it difficult to tell people´s age, but this kid had to be maybe seven and was looking up to her with big eyes - eyes that seemed all too familiar. ´Now don´t jump to conclusions at once´ an inner voice told her insistantly ´mutant kids aren´t exactly unusual.´ Still, it was rather strange for this kid to show up here, of all places. "Er...hi?" she heard herself say, bewilderment taking away some of the usual self confidence in her voice.

In the meantime, Gambit had to pay attention to the frying pan, no matter how curious he was about the unexpected visitor.

"Trick or treeeeat!" the girl chirped in a voice that revealed some dozen of other doors of Halloween experience already behind her. She stared at Shade with the same expectancy with which she'd just been staring at the door.

Shade had just kept staring. Usually, her reaction towards people was not that awkward, but this was just... kind of bizarre. Her thoughts were confusing. She told herself that jumping to conclusions just because of someone´s eye colour was kind of quick judgement, but then again this sort of eye colour wasn´t exactly something one saw every day. Even beng around mutants a lot of the time, Shade had only once seen eyes like these so far. She caught herself looking up and down the corridor, but there was noone else to be seen. That added to the oddness. "Well,..." she said with a somewhat lopsided smile. "uhm... how about I just go inside and see what I can find, okay? What´s your name?" Her voice sounded relatively balaced.

"Connie," the girl informed Shade, peeking with curiosity into the door past Shade's legs. Candies or what..?

Gambit could hear the voices from the corridor but couldn't make out any words over the sizzling of meat and oil on the pan. Well, he said to himself, at least there were no gunshots coming. But who was it?..
