It was a warm and sunny day and Shade was wearing short trousers and a top, standing up to her ankles in the cool water of the lake. It was the day after Gambit had left for New Orleans and after her early morning swim in the lake she had decided to turn the day into something useful and train her powers. Standing in the water, she focussed on her invisibility, trying to extend it to the water as she had done in a bathtub before, trying to form purposeful patterns on the calm surface of the lake, emitting from where here legs were. The patterns grew and were unstable and chaotic, leaving the already know pattern of fluffy little invisible spots behind instead of forming gracious lines.
Shade felt it was harder for her to concentrate here, in the lake. There was more water here, she had to be more careful to direct her powers and to not give in to the subconscious urge of her instincts who were wild on trying how far she could extend her invisibility, who were intent on trying whether she could make large amounts of the waters turn invisible. She kept that urge in check. It would drain her at once she knew. Instead she kept playing with her powers on a smaller scale, shaky lines of invisibility forming from her ankles across the water.

It was easy enough to pass time by taking a walk in the grounds, as the Doctor often did. Normally his walks were quiet, and he didn't see many others around. He saw a distant figure at the lake, and curiously made his way over before recognising who it was. He stopped, silent, not wanting to disturb her power useage. ((Set before the Beach thread. ))

Watching the lines, Shade tried to influence where they would run, knowing it was just an optical illusion and that the water would feel just like it always did. Concentrating hard on just one like she somehow managed to produce a shaky, odd little spyral of invisibilty and chuckled at herself, lost in what she was doing, not even realising she was being watched. At once her concentration slipped and her powers started to tug uneasily as while she was watching that one line, the other patches of invisibility turned chaotic once more, spreading, wearing her out. Before it could make her dizzy, she pulled them back, leaving the lake a smooth, undisturbed surface once more.

The Doctor watched the water, seeing the lines reappear around her legs. He didn't speak instantly, not wanting to startle her. After a short moment, his head lifted and he greeted her quietly. "Hello, Shade."

Shade had noticed with some satisfaction that controlling the lines was easier than she had thought it would be; although it had looked far from graceful it was an interesting progress. Nothing she would have been capable of doing months back and she inwardly smirked at the thought. When she heard someone adress her, she had totally withdrawn her powers and was calm enough to not be startled. Recognising the voice, she turned around and looked over her shoulder, then stepped out of the water. "Doctor." she said, smiling. "Long time, no see."

He smiled as she turned, slipping his hands into his trousers pockets as he stood there. "True," he agreed. "How are you?"
((Sorry for the wait!))

He didn´t ask where she had been and Shade was glad for it. Her absence from the mansion due to the accident had been a long one. Some asked questions and she knew she didn´t want to give the answer to it, because the accident was nothing to spread around as she knew Gambit didn´t want it to be something widely known. By now she shared that view on the events. She walked towards the shore and sat down on the grass. "Really fine." she said truthfully, although an ´apart from the fact that I´m terribly missing someone´ was on the tip of her tongue to follow. "What about you?" ((Never mind ))

"I'm well, thank you," he replied, the answer possibiliy quite vague, but then again, people didn't open their heart out to questions which were really by way of greeting. He lowered down to sit besides her on the grass, pulling his knees up a little so they bent. "Not seen you around much lately," he said, looking towards her.

There was the remark she had thought he would drop. Shade shrugged inwardly. She had reacted to it quite a few times already without drawing much suspition. "I´ve been away with my boyfriend for a while and I stayed at his place in the city, so I´ve not been around the mansion much the last couple of weeks." she said, propping back on her elbows, wriggling her toes in the grass.

"Ah," he said simply without further commenting. He merely accepted that as her response and moved on with it. "I think we could all do with a break," he mused momentarily with a wry smile.

Shade turned her head to the side looking at him. Something, although she could not say for sure what it was, told her there was something on his mind. "You sound like it." she said with a small smile. "Something troubling you?"

"I'm fine," he said with a small shake of his head. It wasn't really a conversation for Shade, or anyone, really. "Just really looking forward to going to the beach and getting out of here for a short while."

Shade was pretty sure there was more behind his words and he was not as fine as he pretended to be, but she left his answer with a raised eyebrows and no other reply to it. She had heard some of the students talking about a beach trip the day before on the corridors and had been wondering whether she should come too. Beach would be nice and hanging around all day wouldn´t be the best of ideas anyways. Gambit would most likely be gone for another couple of days. "I heard about the trip there." she therefore said. "I think I´ll go too."

"Good change of scenery," the Doctor decided. "Should be nice change for all of us," he added as he leant back on his hands a little and watched the lake ahead of him. Things at the mansion lately had been looking up somewhat, at least his own troubles seemed to be easing. But he doubted he would ever experience plain sailing.

"Hm..." Shade agreed looking out at the lake. She didn´t feel much like a change of scenery was in order for her. The last change in scenery had been two weeks in a plain boring hotel and a hospital room and she was glad things had been getting back to more normal places again. She couldn´t help her thoughts drifting off into the same familiar direction they had been running all day and yesterday too ever since she had taken the cab back to the mansion. You´re hopeless Shadey, she thought to herself.
