::Weapon X had several ideas over the decades, some better than others, but all devoted to the idea of harming and controlling mutants. This last idea, however, was the worst yet, both in terms of conception and the final form it had taken.
They created a mutant, a combination of Apex and technology, merged with their own genetic experiments. They called her Hydra. Green body, hair of tentacles, chillingly in control. Her ability was unique: she secreted a substance which would control a person, converting them to a partial hive mind she controlled. A bite or an injection led to a fate worse than death; once a person was taken over, they could not be taken back. She also had a healing factor, which would make destroying her very difficult.
She was created to hunt down other mutants and take them over. But she broke free of the Weapon X programming, and her own desires for domination came forth, and so she began taking over humans and mutants alike. One at first, then another, then another, until over a period of weeks, hundreds had been taken: tentacles sprouted from their chests, and they stared out with cold, blank eyes, all seen by Hydra. They maintained their abilities, but could not use them against other Hydra. There was only limited personality there, enough to trap another, but not enough to ever break free. With those hundreds, the numbers would double each day, until eventually Hydra was all that was left.
A few days later, and there were thousands upon thousands, soon enough to spread further. Manhattan was Ground Zero, where it all began. It was the most dangerous place to be, and the government had come in, trying to create blockades; it was not working well.
If you could get out and to the Xavier mansion, they were keeping refugees. Otherwise, you were on your own.::
