Kyra hurried out onto the grounds, away from everyone else. She sat on a stone bench as hot tears began to run down her face. She was starting to like it here, and thought she'd maybe made a friend in that guy Pietro. Why did he say those things to her? Was he trying to freak her out on purpose? Was this some kind of ritual everyone here went through? She wondered if it was something they did to make sure they'd last here. If it was, she didn't want to be here.

::The Professor wheeled across the grounds, returning from an errand that morning. As he approached the mansion, by way of the gardens, he heard the sound of sobbing. Always concerned for those in pain, he changed direction, towards the source.
Kyra sat on a bench, weeping to herself. Memories replayed in his mind, of Jade, of Raven. Whatever had upset her, he was there to help. Reaching into his pocket, he removed his handkerchief and held it out to her, as he stopped his chair beside the bench.:: "Kyra, whatever is the matter?"
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 1:11am
She looked up, and saw...the Professor, holding out a handkerchief to her, asking her what was wrong. He didn't seem like the person who'd encourage anything like this, but still...
She hesitated, then accepted the handkerchief, wiping her tears. "Is that what you guys do, here? Welcome the new girl, and freak her out? See if she can last?" Her voice was soft and hoarse, and she hated how it came out.

::Xavier's brow furrowed in concern. Hazing, had somebody attempted to haze her? This was the first time he had been made aware of any such incident, in the history of the Institute. Shaking his head, he spoke in a gentle voice.:: "That isn't our policy. Has somebody harmed you?"
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 1:19am
She shook her head. "No." Pietro didn't hurt her, but he looked like he'd been close to.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 1:21am
::There was harm besides physical, and she was quite upset. Xavier asked again.:: "Did somebody threaten you?"
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 1:24am
"He just...said some freaky stuff," she said quietly, still wiping her face.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 1:28am
"Who?" ::Xavier asked. His immediate thought was John, but he and Marie disappeared so often that he was most likely not at the Institute. Erik was still missing, Scott would never do such a thing, nor would Nicholas, and even Logan had better manners. That ruled out faculty, and most of the male students were polite.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 1:34am
She paused. Even after what happened, she didn't want to be a tattler. Too many people did that to her in the past, and she'd hated it.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 1:35am
::Her trepidtion was obvious, even without telepathy. Still, as HeadMaster, Xavier could not allow students to feel as though the Institute was unsafe.:: "Kyra, please, if this is happening, I need to be able to stop it. This is a safe haven, not a fraternity."
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 1:39am
"He said his name was...Pietro," she said quietly. "He got angry with me and started yelling about stuff that I didn't really understand."
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 1:42am
::Xavier suppressed his sigh; of course it was Pietro. Possessed of quick temper and paranoia over Raven's presence. Kyra was a shapeshifter, albeit in a limited capacity, and he could imagine how his nephew's suspicions could have been aroused.:: "He wasn't angry at you."
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 1:47am
Sure he'd apologized. After he made her cry, of course. Then he'd been sorry he took it too far. "I didn't even understand what he was talking about," she muttered.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 1:56am
::Of course she didn't, if Pietro had been on a rant about his father or Raven. She had no way of understanding how was was caught in the middle of a complicated waltz, each person involved stepping carefully.
Xavier needed to speak with Pietro, reminding him to curb his temper around the students. This was a school, a safe haven, and although the other man meant well...it quickly grew out of hand.:: "Please don't take the incident personally. Pietro is prone to erratic behavior."
::It was not quite the truth, but it was a far simpler explanation than the situation with Raven. And although Xavier would always sympathize with the twins for their plight, it was difficult to demand the same sympathy from those who had suffered equally harsh, if not harsher, childhoods than the Maximoffs.::

"I was starting to get used to this place, and, well, it's just...he made me feel like I was, um, being a burden by being here," she admitted. She'd been starting to think that maybe she had overstayed her welcome, and that she should move on.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 2:08am
"You aren't a burden, Kyra. Never believe that," ::Xavier said, emphasizing the word "never." He knew that his own introduction to her had not helped that feeling, but he had slowly been adjusting to her identity. That Pietro's temper might frighten her of was simply unacceptable.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 2:19am
"I've been told differently in the past, Sir. So it's nothing new to me," she said quietly, her cheeks becoming flushed.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 2:26am
"You aren't a burden," ::Xavier repeated. Whoever told her that, her parents, her teachers, her friends, had been wrong. It always pained him when students took their past experiences, their rejections to heart. And he would spend as much time as it took to convince her of her own value.:: "And you are welcome, and wanted, here."
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 2:38am
"I'll try and keep that in mind," she said. Folding the handkerchief, she handed it back to him with a half-hearted smile.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 2:40am
"Please do," ::Xavier said gently, taking his handkerchief. It was encouraging that she had been growing comfortable here, and with tender care, she would remain comfortable.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 2:52am
She nodded. "I'm just not good at...getting comfortable around people," she admitted. She guessed part of it was because of her mutation, but maybe it was just her.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 2:55am
"And there isn't a rush, Kyra. However, the other students here, the faculty, they're good people. And they would like to get to know you, when you are more comfortable," ::Xavier said. With the instability of her mutation, it might be difficult to make friends. And she had been avoiding meals. Still, given time, he was certain she would make friends.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 3:07am
"I don't know if I ever can get comfortable around people, Sir," she said quietly.
"I had a nightmare last night...and my roommate wasn't there, but I ripped up my mattress." She looked down at her hands, embarrassed. Her cheeks began to flush.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 3:10am
"You might not believe it, but that is far more common than you would think. You have a gift, Kyra, and your emotions affect it. But with time, you will learn control, and you need not fear being around others," ::Xavier wanted to ease her fears, as he had with *his* Strype. Kyra, it seemed, was every bit the insecure young woman he had gotten to know through Jade.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 3:14am
"I just don't want to hurt anyone," she said quietly.
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 3:15am
"You have not, and you will not. Have faith in yourself," ::Xavier said, voice gentle. As always, there was the risk. But she was no more a danger than anyone else.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 3:22am
She shrugged slightly. "I'll try, Professor."
Posted by The Man on May 27, 2007, 3:22am
"That's all that can ever be asked," ::Xavier replied, a soft, encouraging smile on his lips.::
Posted by Strype on May 27, 2007, 3:29am
After a brief, uncomfortable pause, Kyra spoke up. "I'm glad that that wasn't what I thought it was."
She was beginning to get used to it here, and didn't really want to leave.
Posted by The Man on May 28, 2007, 1:09am
"No, it wasn't, and I will speak to him," ::Xavier said with a nod. A poor encounter could change the entire tone of her education. Thankfully, she seemed in better spirits than when he had first found her. And if she remained comfortable, then she could reach out to other students to make friends.::
Posted by Strype on May 29, 2007, 8:42pm
"Well, thank you, Professor," she said, getting up off the bench. He'd helped her to feel a lot better; better than she'd felt in what seemed like days.
Posted by The Man on May 29, 2007, 11:42pm
"That's why I'm here, Kyra," ::The Professor replied with a soft smile. She appeared in better spirits, and that was all he could do. Until he spoke with Pietro, of course.::
Posted by Strype on May 30, 2007, 12:16am
She returned his smile. "Well, I'm going back up to my room, but I guess I'll see you at dinner," she said. It would be the first meal she would go to; that marked it as special. She would be meeting up with the rest of the other students who she hadn't met before.
Posted by The Man on May 30, 2007, 12:23am
"I'll need to make something special then," ::Xavier replied with a soft smile. He was proud of her, for taking the initiative and joining the other students for a meal.::
Posted by Strype on May 30, 2007, 12:29am
"Excellent," she said, her smile widening. She'd really liked his mac and cheese, so dinner would be nothing but amazing.
"See you!" With that, she turned and headed inside, intent on taking a nap in her room; or something to calm or distract her for awhile.
Posted by The Man on May 30, 2007, 12:35am
::Xavier nodded fare well to her, remaining outside for a moment longer, enjoying the weather. After a moment of contemplation, on the similarities between Kyra and Jade, he wheeled towards the mansion. Resolved to have a long discussion with Pietro about the danger of jumping to conclusions.::
Kyra hurried out onto the grounds, away from everyone else. She sat on a stone bench as hot tears began to run down her face.
