Rogue hit the tree with enough force to bruise her knuckles but she didn't care. She wanted to go and find John and hide Beth there but with his dad's prescence she knew that wasn't an option. The girl was asleep in Rogue's room, oblivious to the world around her. The moon was high in the black velvet sky and Rogue looked at it as she calmed.

::The Professor came up behind her. What had happened in his office was far from over. And it wouldn't do for her to hurt herself over this.:: "Marie," ::he said quietly.::

She had been able to sleep better these days, but still enjoyed staying up late with a good book. She had been sitting at her windowsill when she saw Rogue storm out. Shade felt her friend was upset, snatched her jacket, walked out of her room and exited the mansion. Approaching the tree, she called out to her silently, not wanting to disturb those already asleep.
"Hey, what´s up Rogey?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 5:48pm
Rogue's head snapped around at voices. She looked at Shade and shrugged.
'I'm fine.' she insisted with a smile, looking at the professor slowly. 'Really I'm fine.'

She was lieing, Shade could tell that easily as she was all too good in these sorts of lies herself. Looking at Rogue and then seeing the professor come closer she sensed there had been some sort of argument going on between them.
"Should I go?" she asked, not wanting to intrude.
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 5:52pm
::The Professor looked at Shade. Of course she would come out to talk to Rogue. That's what good friends did for one another. His gaze fell on Rogue again.:: "I'd like to talk, regardless."
::To Shade, he nodded slightly.:: "If you don't mind, Shade. Thank you."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 5:54pm
Rogue shrugged, slumping against the tree.
'Shade you're not interrupting anything.' she looked back at the Professor with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. 'Talk away.
'

Shade nodded shortly. She shouldn´t have intruded she felt.
Looking at Rogue, she shortly hesitated.
"I guess you guys get things settled first. YOu know where you can find me when you need to talk."
Then she turned and walked away.

::The Professor waited until Shade had left before leaning forward in his chair.:: "Does your hand hurt?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 5:56pm
'No - I've said already - I'm fine.' she insisted, flexing her fingers slightly.
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 5:58pm
"As you wish," ::The Professor said. If her hand hurt, she could visit Hank in the medlab. That wasn't why he was there.:: "Words are like bullets, Marie."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 6:00pm
Rogue sighed softly.
'Yeah they are,' she agreed with a shrug, 'but sometimes bullets are justified.'

"Not without proper care," ::The Professor continued. He folded his hands in his lap.:: "It's not safe for your little girl Beth and it isn't safe for Raven's baby."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 6:05pm
'yeah but you're keeping the baby,' she pointed out with a frown
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:07pm
::Keeping the baby had two different meanings. He certainly wasn't going to encourage her to have an abortion. But he had yet to make up his mind about keeping Raven and the baby at the mansion. At least until Wideawake had been dealt with properly. Then again, if they didn't handle Wideawake soon, there wouldn't be an Institute in eight months. The Professor sighed softly.:: "Not necessarily here."

'So back to the streets where Erik found her then?' Rogue hissed before she heard herself and looked away guiltily.
'I didn't mean that.'

::Xavier's eyes flashed with anger but he managed to keep his face closed. She hadn't meant it. She was upset; she wasn't thinking. Still, he needed to teach these students to be careful with their words. He could think of a number of responses, about running from obligations, about Erik. But he was an adult; he knew better.:: "Is that what you think of me, Marie?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 6:13pm
'No.' she admitted, 'but I don't look up to you anymore.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:25pm
::Her words floored him; for a long moment he remained quiet. Of course she didn't. He had failed so many people. Perhaps it was time to turn the school over to Scott and Ororo and be done with it. No matter what he did, he didn't think he could help anyone any longer.
The anger evaporated from his eyes, replaced with hurt. When he spoke, his voice was very soft.:: "That will never stop me from caring."

'I know.' she said quietly, 'but you've changed, sir. Or maybe I just realise that you're a human rather than some immortal person with all the answers.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:30pm
"I've never pretended to be anything but human," ::The Professor replied, his words barely audible. It was a point of contention. He tried his best, of course, but as he had told Ororo, he was still fallible. It pained him, to fail others. His mortality was still in question. He wasn't sure if he could pull off his survival trick again. And he didn't want to test it.:: "Marie, answer me a question honestly."

Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:35pm
"Do you think this is the best place for her, even if you weren't here to help her?" ::It was a difficult question to ask, but he had to make certain her affection wasn't clouding her judgment.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 6:37pm
Rogue shrugged and wrung her hands slightly.
'Well, I can't think of a place where she'd be more welcome but I guess that with all the stuff goin on...' she trailed off and shook her head. 'No it's probably not.'

"You see my fear." ::Xavier's thoughts returned to Gabrielle's email, about what was happening in Spain. He feared that the young girl would never see her mother again. And they needed to find her family. That was why foster care had been his first impulse.
Something occurred to him. She had said that she and John had found the little one. John, who was back with his abusive father. Those were the options ahead of them, at least for now. He hoped that her resignation wasn't because she had decided to let him take the girl.:: "John can't have her," ::He said quietly, his words tinged with an almost sense of desparation.::

'Who said John was having her anyway?'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:46pm
"Promise me you won't let her go with him," ::The Professor said urgently, ignoring the question. He wasn't an immortal with all of the answers, but he was still a telepath. And he had been raising children for decades. He'd been an idealistic teenager himself once, long ago.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 6:49pm
Rogue looked up at the Professor, her expression decidedly blank.
'I... I guess I promise.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:53pm
"Marie," ::Xavier knew that look. It was what a person resorted to when they had no intention of keeping a promise. He wasn't going to let another child fall into the hands of an abuser. It was painful enough that John had willingly gone back to him. But they all tried to cleanse themselves in their own way.:: "You can't let her go with him. We'll find a relative, but you can't let John take her to his father's house."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 6:57pm
'Fine.' she muttered, running a hand through her hair. She hated John's father from what John had told her and the memories she'd absorbed but she'd never heard him lay a finger on his small sister but she agreed with the Professor nonetheless. 'Fine - I promise.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 6:59pm
"Thank you," ::The Professor replied. The relief was evident in his voice.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:00pm
'So how are you?' Rogue asked, changing the subject abrubtly.
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:02pm
::The Professor didn't intend on forgetting the subject, but he allowed it to drop for the moment.:: "Do you wish an honest answer?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:07pm
'Yes,' Rogue replied simply.
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:11pm
::He wouldn't burden her with his problems. She had enough of her own. With Erik and John, now the girl as well. Besides, he was her Professor. And even though she no longer respected him, that wasn't an excuse to sever the relationship on his side. As such, he forced a thin smile.:: "I'll be fine."

'That doesn't mean you are fine though,' Rogue pointed out.

"I always look to the future," ::The Professor replied. That was how he got through the worst of times. His search for hope.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:19pm
'The future's always scared me,' Rogue admitted quietly.
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:22pm
"Why?" ::The Professor asked, his brow creasing in concern. She was young, the future ahead of her had all the potential of the world.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:26pm
'You never know what's coming,' Rogue explained with a shrug, 'I don't like dwelling on what could happen and what you could loose.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:31pm
::That was a result of her age, Xavier knew. As you got older, you spent more time reflecting on what could be. But there was a problem beyond that.:: "Of course you don't know what's coming," ::The Professor replied, trying to lighten the mood.:: "That's what life is for."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:33pm
'Yeah I guess. But sometimes it's nice to know what to expect.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:36pm
"You don't want to be psychic," ::THe Professor replied, his voice suddenly serious.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:37pm
'That much I agree with,' Rogue said with a sigh, 'other people's memories are bad enough.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:37pm
"I know," ::Xavier replied. He did know, all too well.:: "Are you sleeping better now?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:40pm
Rogue nodded, 'yeah thanks. Not a nightmare in almost two weeks.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:42pm
"Good," ::The Professor replied. Thank the Lord for small favors. He only wished that he could do more.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:43pm
'You know you look like you could do with some more sleep yourself,' Rogue mused
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:45pm
::The mansion seemed obsessed with making sure he slept. The Professor was touched by the concern, but that didn't mean he was going to sleep any easier. It would be more difficult, since he knew this conversation would keep him awake most of the night.:: "There's always the weekend."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:47pm
Rogue laughed a little.
'I guess.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:50pm
::The Professor tried to smile in response to her laughter, but it didn't reach his eyes. The entire situation haunted him.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:51pm
'Or you could come to one of Erik's classes - I told him I only took 'em to sleep in.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:52pm
"I sat in on his first psychology class; that was enough," ::The Professor replied. He didn't want to talk about Erik right now. He felt terrible enough.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 17, 2007, 7:54pm
Rogue smiled.
'That bad huh?'
Posted by The Man on Mar 17, 2007, 7:56pm
"He doesn't appreciate my presence and I respect that," ::The Professor replied, trying to keep his voice flat.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 18, 2007, 4:35am
Rogue shrugged.
'Okay.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 19, 2007, 12:13am
::The Professor replied with a slight nod; an attempt to simply stop that topic of conversation.:: "And how are your other classes?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 19, 2007, 12:38pm
'They're alright,' she said with a smile, 'Art's... well art's different.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 19, 2007, 4:12pm
"I would expect nothing else from Logan," ::The Professor replied. Logan was anything but an artist, but he had brought it upon himself.:: "Was the first class all right?"
Posted by Rogue on Mar 19, 2007, 4:14pm
'Well no-one got attacked, which was more than I expected,' Rogue said with a slight smile
Posted by The Man on Mar 19, 2007, 4:19pm
"He has more self-control than people give him credit for," ::Xavier replied. If he didn't, he wouldn't have been allowed to return.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 19, 2007, 4:21pm
'I suppose,' Rogue pondered, remembering how he'd calmed himself when he'd first smelt Erik on her. It had taken a few yells but eventually he'd given in and admitted she was old enough to make her own choices. She looked up at the Professor slowing, 'I think he actually has more control than John.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 19, 2007, 4:23pm
"He's older than John," ::The Professor replied. John's youth and inexperience would be his downfall. If he chose to stay with his father rather than return to safety. He also knew of Marie's flirtation with John and it wasn't his place to comment.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 19, 2007, 4:24pm
Rogue nodded.
'You have quite amazing self control,' she said after a small moment of thought, 'I don't think I've ever seen you loose your temper.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 23, 2007, 10:51am
::The Professor grew momentarily silent. Of course she hadn't. He kept his temper under tight control. He rarely lost it, even in the worst of circumstances. And when he did, he made certain he was alone, so that nobody would see. The Institute needed at least one calm presence to help them through the problems. And with the nature of his powers, he needed to engage in a controlled loss of control; anything more intense would be disasterous.
Finally, he nodded, folding his hands in his lap.:: "Thank you, Marie."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 23, 2007, 12:51pm
'Your welcome,' she said, shutting her eyes slowly.
'Mind if I ask something mega-personal?'
Posted by The Man on Mar 23, 2007, 12:52pm
"You can ask," ::Xavier replied, sighing mentally. If it was something too personal, he would decline answering. But as this evening had already been a nightmare, they might as well keep it up.::
Posted by Rogue on Mar 23, 2007, 1:03pm
'How did the whole you and Mysti thing come about?' she asked quietly. She'd seen Erik's reaction and had asked no further questions for the pity of his emotional sake; and having absorbed both Erik and Mystique she knew enough back story to view the situation as even more bizarre than others thought.
Posted by The Man on Mar 24, 2007, 10:24pm
::It was such a brash question; Xavier grew quiet, trying to think of how to best answer. He thought of Erik, of the feelings that had brought them together, the shared pain. He thought of Rogue's relationship with him now; and it only made him grow protective. As though they all suffered from an illness and needed support to survive it.
He felt guilt over how the relationship had begun; he had been less than a gentleman when he requested such things from Raven. And the encounter and accusations from Erik had been enough. He didn't need to think more about it.
Marie was a student; she had no business knowing such details.:: "That's too personal to explain tonight."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 25, 2007, 9:39am
'Fair enough,' Rogue replied with a small shrug.
'But now you get to ask me something.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 26, 2007, 2:34am
::It was the logic of teenagers; one question for another. However, it was late, and the Professor had nothing he wanted to ask. The only question that came to mind was about Erik; and he would rather not know.:: "I'd rather save that question for later, if I may."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 26, 2007, 2:46am
Rogue shrugged again.
'Your choice.'
Posted by The Man on Mar 26, 2007, 2:50am
"I shall, then." ::The Professor replied. The hour was late and he was tired. However, he wasn't certain he could sleep as a result of this.:: "You should check on her to make certain she hasn't had a nightmare."
Posted by Rogue on Mar 26, 2007, 2:55am
Rogue nodded slowly and stood up.
'Good night then sir,'
Posted by The Man on Mar 26, 2007, 1:22pm
"Goodnight Marie," ::Xavier replied with a nod of his head. He glanced over at the mansion, where he bedroom window was. He hoped that the little girl slept through the night. And that the morning would bring with it a willingness to accept the inevitabilty of the situation.::
Rogue hit the tree with enough force to bruise her knuckles but she didn't care. She wanted to go and find John and hide Beth there but with his dad's prescence she knew that wasn't an option.
