Alex hadn't been ready for an abrupt change of activity, and though, of course, he was able to keep up with the running, the shift of topic from being an orphan to running was... unusual, to say the least.
"Yeah," he admitted nonetheless. "Way to change the subject," he chuckled.

"Sorry, I try not to be so unpredictable, but between my sorrow and your own, and us trying to comfort one another by sharing the pain, it was over whelming," Iris said stretched her hands above her to stretched out the cramps a little better. "Besides, nothing brings me out of a funk and back into the present then a little exercise," let out a small laugh and pulled out a handkerchief from her pocket and wiped her brow.
"I'm not much of a runner though, thank you for being kind enough not to leave me in the dust."

"Hey, it was you who dragged me by the hand," Alex reminded with a grin. "But look, it was worth it- and we're almost done with our walk around the lake, I seriously thought it would take longer to go completely around it."

Iris lifted a finger and recited, “With good company any task is shorter,” she quipped cheerfully as she walked to the edge of the small overlook and kicked a pebble into the water. “You were pleasant company Alex; I’m glad that I decided to explore the grounds for a little bit today.” She looked down at the water and shook her head. “Dreadful isn’t it, this lovely lake and I can’t even swim in it.”

"If it makes you feel any better, during this season, very few people can," Alex suggested a perspective. He picked up a flatter pebble and tossed it along the water, watching it skip a few times before drowning.

Iris made a face and wrinkled her nose. She looked back at Alex and gave a small snort. “Smart-aleck,” she said before picking up a rock herself and throwing it. It hit the water hard and instantly sank. She watched Alex some more, then tried again, which the rock sank again. She frowned; tempted to take a piece of thread to flick the rock to insure it would skip. But that seemed like cheating, if Alex could do it without his power so could she.

"You ever tried this?" Alex asked, watching. He hadn't had an intention of provoke her for the same activity with his mindless gesture, but if she wanted to try it as well, he could probably give her a piece of advice. Not that he'd ever seen any girl manage rock-skipping - with or without guidance.

“No, there weren’t any bodies of water where I lived growing up. I’m not really an outdoorsy type of person, I’m more the, ‘stay inside baking, knitting, reading,’ type person. I like nature though, I just don’t venture that far into it,” Iris said throwing another rock and watching it sink. She looked at Alex, “You seem like the type who enjoys outdoor activities though, what do you like to do?”

"I'm a California guy," Alex grinned, "we surf." Actually, he liked to be outdoors for many different reasons and activities, but he gave the most fun one.

“Surfing, that seems interesting,” Iris said politely not really knowing much about the sport other then it involved a board, water, and waves. “I hear that California is very pretty though. What’s the ocean like? I’ve never been.”

"The ocean-" Alex began and halted, not really knowing how to describe it. The ocean was pretty much the equivalent of the most of his life, in Hawaii, in Anchorage, in Long Beach... How could someone live without an ocean, a sea nearby?
"It's big. It's enormous. You wake up in the morning and you go to the beach and it's breathing at you, pushing gigantic waves at you, and you know as soon as you leave the firm ground you don't stand a chance out there in the open. It governs your life, changes your weather, it's eternal. When you see the ocean, you know how fleeting you are. One second you're there, the next second it licks away your footprints and there's not a trace of you anymore."

"It sounds lovely," Iris said closing her eyes and trying imagine it from the description that Alex was giving her. "I would like to try and paint it, or even make a tapestry of it to try to capture something so large and imposing," she said opening her eyes and looking at Alex. She walked closer to the edge of the lake and leaned over the water by hanging onto the trunk of a young tree. She looked at her reflection thoughtfully. "What about surfing, what makes you like it so?"

Alex thought that one would need to see the ocean first, to feel its majestic nature, before trying to draw a picture of it, but he was certain Iris understood this anyway.
"Following logically from what I said before," he smiled, "it gives me a sense of unity with the ocean. Though," he added, "I'm not too much into any of this philosophy stuff, so it will be closer to the truth to say that it's a nice workout and everybody does it."

Iris let out a low chuckle, "That does sound fun," she agreed before pulling back from the edge of the water and walking back to Alex. She picked up a rock and held it out for him. Granted it was a lumpy looking one she didn't know what type of rock would skip across the water. "Could you please teach me to skip rocks?" she asked him politely.

Alex chuckled. "I could try," he replied, "I don't know if I'm much of a teacher. You'll need a flat pebble, like a small pancake," with that, he threw away the one she'd presented and, bending down, found something more suitable for the purpose.
Taking a step towards the water edge, he leaned a bit to the side and forward and threw the stone. It skipped two or three times before disappearing without a sound. "Something like that. It needs to hop against the water surface."
