"The mansion," Lance echoed, looking at Iris dubiously with the piece of paper in his hand. What, just his luck, running into an Xavier's student? "What do you mean, mansion? The 'royal highness' jokes weren't so much jokes, after all?" he asked, still having a hope he was mistaken.

"It's a manison, a school for mutants. I'm mostly just staying there until I figure out what to do and when I have better control over my powers," Iris said before frowning at the surface feelings coming from Lance. "Xavier's?" she asked looking a little worried as she studied Lance's face. "Is that a problem? I'm not a student if you're worried about that, I'm twenty so that would be silly."
"You have that same look on your face as Mr. Lehnsher did when I mentioned it. Is there something I'm missing about Xavier's?"

Xavier's. Lenscher. Wow, Lance thought, he was right in the middle of it again. "No, I mean- I wouldn't know. It's just that there are so many mansions around, I thought I'd clarify." He walked to the apartment door, checking his pocket for keys just in case.

He was lying she could tell by how he was speaking and standing. She wanted to question his reaction a little more, but decided against it. She didn't want to sour the meeting with extra questions on a testy subject. She followed after him and as they walked outside she opened the umbrella, pressing it into Lance's hand.
Then she did something a little bold, she wrapped her arm in the crook of his elbow as they walked. She decided he needed some distraction from what he was thinking. "Lets try not to get attacked this time, I hear it's bad luck."

Lance had indeed gotten a bit grim at all the relevant names thrown around and what it could imply for him, but his mood could clear pretty fast if he had a good incentive, and her arm hooked in his was a very good incentive. "Yeah, but I'm not supersticious," he replied, taking the umbrella and holding it more or less above the both of them. For once rain seemed like a good thing... "I'm more of a sci-fi, technofuture kind of guy. So you can just imagine I have armed cyberg limbs with which I'll protect you-" he barely held from adding 'Your Highness.'

"Sometimes I am, I never stitch things three times, I try not to step on cracks, and I'm not fond of the number thirteen. Silliness and childish things to think, but a girl has to get her luck where she can," Iris said leaning a little more on Lance as they walked. "I prefer more modern books, but I enjoy the type set in the middle ages, without the plague and dying when your forty of course."
"I'll just pretend you're a rugged thief who left training before becoming a knight. And I'll be the lone peasant woman whose actually royalty in disguise," she said her cheeks flushing, "And you can even say, 'excuse me princess.'

"I can go with that," Lance agreed enthusiastically. He recalled Syrin - she, too, used to joke about him being a knight who'd ride his steed into the night with a sword or something... whatever. It had been ages ago. He assumed that was his trademark image of sorts.
And since Iris was so closely leaning to him, no matter whether it was intentional or not, he couldn't help but add, "and I also have a special magic gift to rock your world, keep that in mind."
(( I gotta be off now. ))

Iris gave him an annoyed, dull look as he mentioned rocking her world. "I'm afraid to ask if that involved my favorite hobbies. Needlework, cooking, classical music," she told him before chuckling a little. His hints were amusing and bold. So far he had no clue on how inexpeienced she was, but he wasn't forcing her to do anything so she was comfortable for now.
"Unless you meant rock and roll, which I'm not much of a fan."

"Well, you can have your hobbies, I'm okay with that," Lance conceded. "Speaking of hobbies - how did you end up in this part of town, anyway?"

"I'm doing a magazine article on hotspots for mutants to go and relax. Surprisingly enough, there's a group of mutants that have put on a play of a remake of Romeo and Juliet. It was really lovely, and I'm hoping by doing this article they'll be able to get some sponsorship to move away from this area," Iris said smiling at the thought of the play.
"Normally I would have been weary and only moved around during daylight. But the director found out what I was doing and took me to see the cast and crew and it took longer then usual. And once the sun went down, apparently being female and blonde makes you a target," she said a little dryly as she ntoiced the lights of the station nearing.

"Wow, so you're press, that's," bound to make me paranoid, Lance thought, "awesome. Hey, that also explains the fancy crowd I'd noticed there, never had any idea what they were all doing in that place. Now I know."
As they neared the train station, he said, "Well, it also makes you attract more rescuers, let's be optimistic."

"I wouldn't put into such fancy terms, I put an article in here and there, and that's only if they like this one I'll be writing up. It's something to get me out there and interact with people. And so far, it's been doing a pretty good job," Iris said glancing up at Lance and smirking. "Don't worry I don't plan on putting you into any of my articles, if that's why those creases are around your mouth."
"I still insist, even if I didn't want to, I would have eventually used my powers against them," Iris said making a face and sticking out her tongue. "And if I would have been a homely girl would you have walked by?"

"Well, no!" Lance exclaimed. "I'd protect any girl. But not everyone is as nice and helpful as me!"

"Of course, well time will tell I suppose this is where my train is at," Iris said standing at the stairs to the subway. "You'll give me a call soon? I am looking forward to it."
She hesitated a moment, running a hand through her ponytail. "Thank you for putting yourself at risk for me, but be more careful."

"Isn't it what I should be telling you, about being more careful next time?" Lance teased. He folded the umbrella. "I don't know, I'm kinda shy about calling to a place where there are lots of strange people," he said half-joking. But seriously, calling Xavier's Institute? Shy was probably not the right word for it.
