"But...I...the only thing it ever got me was being kicked out of school. I don't understand you. If you're talking different hair color making a different species, then by that all blondes wouldn't be human. That doesn't make sense." He'd caught her interest with scientific talk.

::Odin was pleased; he enjoyed speaking science, and she had won him over with her self-designated name.:: "There's a spectrum of hair color found in human nature; mine, for example. Your greens, blues, and purples are not birth color. They're triggered by the mutant gene, which is our common trait. Regardless of manifestation."

"But I don't have that." Lorna shook her head. "All I've got is a test that says there's a rogue gene in me. That's it."

"An unmanifested gene is still a gene," ::Odin pointed out. Surely, she understood what the genetic tests had been designed to find.::

"I guess, but I sort of get the short end of the stick, right?" Lorna said, with a slight twist of her mouth to show her distaste at people's reaction to the aforementioned gene.

"In that you get to be discriminated against by extremists in two groups and don't have the ability to turn on the television by blinking to compensate? I suppose you can look at it that way," ::Odin's humor, even when in rare form, was admittedly off when compared to the norm.::

"No, I mean I get to be in between," she said, a little more quiet this time.

::That was what Odin had implied, but it was his own fault for having a sense of humor out of sync with the population at large. He sobered at her tone.:: "Did it ever occur to you that you might be a late-bloomer?"

"I read the stats. 95% percent of mutants come into their powers between the ages of 10 and 13. A small percentage of what's left are born with their powers. The rest..." she shrugged. "Low powers for some, Class One or Two maybe. After that..." She wasn't embarrassed about having read up on such things. It's what she liked to do.

"I didn't develop my powers between ten and thirteen. The age appears to be decreasing for first onset; as even ten years ago, the average age of development was fourteen or fifteen, with a few younger than that. But we can thank the stress of the times for that; it has a way of triggering mutations, and the hormones in the water supply I'm sure hasn't helped nature's course," ::Odin, as well, read the topic thoroughly. He had his experience as well, which always helped bolster his knowledge of the subject.:: "I've met many mutants who developed at sixteen or seventeen. A few later."

"I guess..." He seemed knowledgeable as well, and he probably should be, since he was part of the statistic. "I'd rather just know, you know? Instead of being surprised by it."

::Odin noticed that her Pepsi was getting low.:: "Would you like a refill? And that desire to *know* right off is what is separating you from the rest of us."

She shook her head; she wasn't much interested in drinking and some stubborn bit inside her said that she'd get a drink when she wanted one. "What are you talking about?"

::Odin had offered, he could do nothing beyond that. To her question, he adjusted the frames on his nose with an index finger.:: "We're all surprised when they develop. It's part of the experience."

"I don't see how that separates me," she objected.
